Fish, Ron won't be done for a few days, and I'm out until Monday (maybe a short sesh on Friday if I can fit it in) or we'd be more than happen to show you, but here's a clip of Ron "pumping" into a smaller wave that shows it pretty well.....

Hope that helps.

Sano,
He makes it look so easy.  Got out this morning, mid 50s air temp and stiff offshores, chilly.  I did attempt the technique felt like it was kind of working but the hi tide and offshores kept blocking me from getting in.  I may try to sneak into Sano at dawn tomorrow to give it another go.  Let me know if you are going down.  thanks!

Guys - Please realize what you are looking at with regards to experience.

Ron in the video has been riding foils behind boats for 20 years.  He is pushing the limits with an angled mast and he is using footstraps.

Beginners AREN'T using footstraps.

I was speaking with Sam P'ae the other day.  I asked how many sessions he thought he had.  He then tells me he has been foiling for 2 1/2 years and goes 'all the time' for the majority of the year . . . . . long story short I estimated Sam as having 400 - 500 sessions under his belt.

Robert can't be far behind, if at all.  300 - 450 sessions?  Robert feel free to correct me.

I have 220 sessions on the foil in everything from 1 to 15 foot conditions with ZERO down-winding experience.

The bad news is that it takes time on the water to get good.  The good news is that you can learn from those who have put the time in and accelerate the process.

I agree, foiling is not hard, especially with the right waves but it takes time !!

First lesson for beginner foilers:
The best way to learn how to to fly a hydrofoil is to get a lesson towing behind a boat. Join Blue Planet staff members Luca and Tyler as they get their first foil lesson from Robert Stehlik and share their takeaways:

This is video #4 in the How to Foil series- pumping the foil- with great tips from Daniel Kaahanui who is great at pumping his prone foil board back out to connect several waves and Zane Saenz who can get up on the foil in flat water using only the paddle and pumping action.

This is the final video in our How To Foil series- #5- turning and carving on a foil.
This one is also a bit more advanced, we talk about how carving is a way to generate speed much like pumping and allows you to stay on the steeper part of the wave.
Also covered are equipment- shorter, smaller, lighter boards make carving easier to initiate and control, while smaller wings will allow more control at higher speeds and in steeper waves.  A longer mast will allow steeper banking without overfoiling (breaching the hydrofoil and losing lift) or touching the rails, while a shorter mast is easier to control and feels less tippy.  Foot straps allow for more board control and a solid connection to the board but are tricky to get into on takeoff and can be dangerous if you can't eject when falling backwards, the front strap can also get in the way of paddling on a prone foil surf board.
