Big storm West Coast
« on: December 21, 2018, 06:08:21 PM »
Big storm here on West Coast Vancouver Island. Power still out. Hundred of trees down and dozens across power lines. Beaches in the park are closed but open here in Tofino. I am heating and cooking with our wood stove. Way too much food with the freezer thawed out. Water is still running but may only have warm water for one more shower after surfing today. Went out to South Chesterman. Deserted. Around head high but stupidly took out my smaller board. Still very choppy from the storm. Getting knocked off when still on my knees. A couple of decent rides but mostly too unstable. Should have taken the 8’10” Speeed out. Picture is of Chesterman Beach road. Rather than take a five minute detour people were driving under these trees. I was tempted but thought my fins might catch.

Picture of drying my gear out by the wood stove. Remarkably this little stove can heat our home. The main heating we use geothermal but it needs emectricity for the fans and to circulate the methanol.

This was our beach access shortly before one of the most destructive storms to hit our area in many years arrived. Don’t need to say but obviously no one was in the water. Be safe.

Wow, that is gnarly.  So sorry.  Those metal stoves put out a lot of heat though, I'll bet you are warm enough in that room.

Thanks Zoo,

Yes the airtight stoves are amazing. This is the first time I have cooked on it. Dampened down a log will last a few hours. Had to get up in the night a couple of times to keep it burning but it kept the house very warm(21.5 deg C) .......warmer than we normally keep it (19 deg C).

Yeah, I remember we had one when I was a kid, and, in SoCal, it made the house too warm.  But, man, do those things work efficiently.  Like you said, a couple of logs heats an entire house for hours.
