Heading to Pavones, CR in April for 2 weeks. Any info about getting there from San Jose and/or best SUP spots would be great!

The best way to get to Pavones from San Jose is by car. It is a longish drive about 8 hours give or take. Depending on what time you get to San Jose (if you arrive early am) you could make a trip in one day. if you arrive later in the day you can stay a night over in Uvita and then continue the next day. What concerns Pavones - there are many spots to surf. The most famous spot might be crowded or not have enough swell. But when it does it is a beautiful left  ;D
You can go south of Pavanes to Punta Banca which is about 10 min drive. Waves there last April when I was there were super epic.

Thanks for all the good info. We will be leaving for Pavones by car early morning, as I was warned that it's a complicated, long drive. Looking forward to seeing the countryside though.

How was the SUP vibe?

have fun--hope you get good waves

in case you get sick of one of the longest lefts in the pwrld, check out matapalo on the nearby osa poeninsula--baby beach around the corner in case matapalo is deadly huge

Be prepared for the last part of the drive. It's all dirt road. Pot holes could be an issue depending on rains. 4 wheel drive with some clearance is advised.

No Sup vibe on the main spot, they don't like us there, but you can make do if you know what you're doing. There are better spots in a 5 miles radius that
might prove to be better for sup and you might even find your self all alone. Have fun.

I didn't have problem on sup even on the main break but it wasn't huge. Everybody was cool. I get more stink eye from Deerfuckingfield Beach in FL  ;D

Glad to hear the vibe is cool in Pavones! We have been to Mal Pais and Nosara, and everyone was cool there too.

Sorry about Florida...I'm sure, like us, you take surf etiquette seriously, but there's often that one guy who has a chip on his shoulder and hates SUP just to hate SUP, even if you're sharing waves.

Uh oh. Looks like there may be some anger in the waves depending which locals are out there. Glad to hear that there are alternate spots to head to.

Any thoughts on the logistics of finding gas and traveling in that part of the world? I read a few articles that say there is gas at the hardware store in Pavones in a jug, but otherwise no fuel. That makes travel a little tricky. We plan on renting a 4x4 in San Jose and would like to explore a little bit.  Especially if we need to find different waves.

Judging by your quiver, you should be  fine. I really started getting some shit when I showed up to the lineup with 10-12 footers
and I can't really say I blame them, they can't compete on wave count and blocking move is dangerous proposition...
For these kind of boards the waves are good almost everywhere, I didn't really need to be clustered like that.

As for Gas, never had issue with that. I made sure to fuel at the last gas station before going on the dirt road, by than you'll know
what your car needs so will be easier to plan. Easy enough to fuel at the hardware store before you leave and pickup few jugs while at it.

The Waze app works really well there, you can easily plan your trips with gas stops.
