I've been wanting to create a board like this for myself for years. The difference between me and rbgar is that he is coming from the super wide 11'2 x 36" Avanti and I am coming from the much narrower M-12'6.

The M-12'6 has fantastic glide and surfs pretty well, but because it is a downwind board, it has way too much volume and thickness. I would thin it out to better suit my weight for surfing, give it less nose rocker and add just a tad more rocker in the middle and tail. I think that would make an awesome surfboard for myself.

Rbgar is going 4" narrower than the Avanti to 32" and 1" less than his 9'6 Flow, but 32" still seems unnecessarily wide for a 12 footer IMO. My 8'10 Flow at 31" is about as narrow as I can comfortably go in that length, but I'm pretty comfortable on my M'12'6 at 28". The Search may look sleek and fast in the pics with its pointy nose but that can be deceiving. There is a ton of surface area there working to slow the board down. The hips and shoulders of the board are fairly wide which takes away from the boards ability to glide. Adding 2" to the width is going to slow it down even more and adding 19 liters to the volume isn't going to help IMO. The wonderful thing about surfing very long SUPs is the extra glide that they provide. Without it, you might as well be surfing a shorter board.

Badger, I'm guessing you are smaller than rbgar? Specs for him may not seem suitable to you, which is apparent given your criticisms of his design.

A board will not necessarily have more glide just because it's narrower. If rbgar is putting pressure on each rail while counter-balancing, that's going to slow the board down. Keeping it flatter with less side-to-side movement will help with glide, possibly more so than going narrower. He also stated in his first post that he is looking for max stability so not sure why there is such debate about the width he's choosing. You also need to take into account skill level, experience and what creates the most overall enjoyment for someone. Just my $0.02.

funny some say its looks to gunny, some to wide, tail should be squash or swallow, to much nose kick, some even know the name of the unknown soldier...  ;D

I'm sure this will be an easy to paddle, handle semi ugly conditions good (to windy on my Munoz SuperGlide or kitesurfing), get in early & perform in 2x overhead, easy & fun in small stuff all stylin at the same time! And compete in my local "brung what ya run" fun races  8)

cheers!

I just wanted to put all possible design options on the table. If it were me, I would rather hear this than compliments. A custom board is a big investment in money and time. As long as you're sure it will do what you want it to, that's all that matters. It's nice of you to share this with us.

I agree. Everyone seems to see different parts of the elephant and think it's a different animal.    :)

When I mentioned too much nose rocker, I was talking about the M-12'6, not the Search.

I was well aware of the differences in our weight when making my suggestions. You weigh 60 pounds more than I do.

Badger; "If it were me, I would rather hear this than compliments..."   Ya, right

Somehow, you ragging on about this, I doubt you would appreciate anyone questioning your ability to think for yourself.  I was amazed you didn't get the hint after your first poke  ...'came back for a second   ...and, then, "As long as you're sure..." for #3.  Jeez?!

It's all good guys, I know this board will perform just fine, it's certainly not a corner banger in the shaping world, pretty standard stuff just fitted to suit.

Cheers!

Years ago Ron House shaped his 11' and 12' x 30" Coastal Cruiser's which later became part of the Riviera line. Here is a video shot years ago by Tom English who is one of the regular local Foil dudes now. Ron rips it up on the guitar while you see pictures of Tom ripping it up on his custom Coastal Cruiser. I've seen Tom surfing this board a bunch of times. Both are super nice guys.

I'm sure rbgar's will be in line with this board range.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

@ TallDude

Nice Ron House video. BTW, the shape of his 12' Coastal Cruiser reminds me of my 11'1" One World. \

Thanks for sharing the video.

Aloha Night Wing,
Your 11'1" One World is definitely in the same genre of "coastal cruiser"...as is it's bigger brother, the 11'11" One World Surfari...fast glider that catches everything from ankle biters to macking 25'+...also, able to be competitively raced to podium finishes in rough river and flatwater conditions as Mo Freitas proved...;-)

Nice - in an interesting twist, adding that to my wish list made it shorter instead of longer. I took off a couple of all around boards; one more a surfing board that kinda tracks/glides and one that tracks/glides well and kinda surfs. Not a low budget board, but the price is not in the stratosphere either.

I never really considered the One World until just now. I didn't know there was an 11'11".  I wonder how it compares to the Search 12'.

I definitely want to get a 12 footer at some point, not as an all around board but purely for surfing. Whatever I get it will probably have to be a custom.

So far, the Search, Bump Surfer and now the One World are the only boards that I know of that come close to the shape I'm looking for.

Aloha Badger,
We've been building the 11'11" One World Surfari for quite a while now...
It captures elements of the doors that the iconic 11'11" "Big Red"  (that I helped design with Sean Ordonez) opened during the early days of modern standup...but, faster rocker and big wave capable...etc...

I actually designed a 13'er with SO that we built here in SB...along with a 14' "channel crosser"...but, after taking the 13'er out in big offshore reef waves...I decided that it was too big, after having my leg almost ripped out of it's socket and being rag dolled for a 1/2 mile down the coast while it was tomb stoning...shivers...so, now it hangs in my shop...

Anyways...sounds like you have some ideas that would necessitate a custom...

As far as comparison to other boards in the genre...
Here's a few One World Surfari design graphics below of an 11'11" x 27" x 4.5" @ 166.22 liters that I have worked on for a client that may help you...

rbgar--love your design and looking forward to hearing about your adventures on it.
I too, love to paddle a couple miles to less populated reefs to surf.  And speaking of Ron House Coastal Cruiser, that's why I got it. Does exactly what I want it to do. My only complaint is it's a heavy board-carrying it down the trail to the beach is a bear.   Allison fins keeps it tracking straight, surfs well, and small fins avoids the reef on low tide (ask me how I know).
