Several questions  come to mind
Of all those  brave if theirb really good   foolish if their  not how many get waves?
How many were out ?
Seems like there were a lot  sort of clogging the take off point  and a lot missed waves !
How big were those waves really?
I surfed that area in the early 70s    pretty sure we surfed there but never when it was really big  15 or more faces  ....... we all  looked  for a cleaner wave like at  4 mile
this i know   it was a miracle that me or my friends didnt get killed! Of 5 of us there was only one that was good enough for really big stuff 15 plus from the back of the wave (  hint  it wasnt me) and considering what we had for leashes   ......    after a few severe  macking  waves  kicked my ass  and 1 board washed into a sea cave  at the lane
i learned to sit outside  hence my name  and for as big as we thought it was in the old guys rule days   todays pictures and videos of waves  seem  SO  much bigger
So imho those old days got nothin on what  i see going on now a days
just seems like todays waves are just flat out bigger   and i just cant get over the crowds out in that video
SEA BIRDS THEY DO TOUCH AND GO AS THE WORLD JUST TANGOES BY.... SO I SADDLE UP MY SEAHORSE WITH MY FLYROD IN MY HAND.... 10'3 King custom  10'6"  c4 da beachboy

Surfline did a great overview here:

https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/one-unpredictable-day-mavericks/41450

Since this is a SUP forum I will add that KAI was crushing it.  From the cliff the view was hazy from 7 am to 9 am during which everyone was TOW-in ONLY.

At the near 1 mile distance you could just make out the lines of whitewater which were actually the wakes from Jetskis.  The surfers themselves made wakes that looked like a single faint crack on an iPhone screen.

HOWEVER - KAI's lines were clearly different.

Most of the Tow-in surfers were going straight running for their lives.  Even at a distance you could see one guy running a high line drawing a big S turn and then turning back into the pit only to come screaming back out at the bottom.  It could only be KAI.

Until 10 am virtually NO-ONE attempted to paddle out.

Then Wade Lawson paddles up on his custom 14' gun coming from the Harbor mouth.  He had paddled from 'The pier' out the harbor mouth and attempted to point west and was faced with an untenable situation and paddled back to the jetty.  He asks where my gear is.  I was with my daughter Ruby.

My other Mavs' Surf Amigo Dave had asked the night before if I wanted to paddle out "even if we have to go the long way around the buoy."  That is 1 1/2 miles south and then back North again.  WTF!  No!  Buoys were forecasted to be 22 ft @ 20 seconds - And they were!

Dave is pictured holding the coffee getting advice from Wade.

I call Haley Fiske and he says he's coming.  Wade waits for Haley.  Wade looks at the maelstrom around mushroom rock and says "This is nothing compared to Nelscott reef."

Haley shows up and blasts right past us.  All smiles NO hesitation.

"Wade are you coming?"

And off they went.

Beasho-

Thanks for taking the time to post all this Mavericks info!

An interesting new post would be on those big wave sup board designs.

Honestly...I'm just trying to wrap me head around these Maverick's photos and videos taken this week.

Mind boggling stuff.

Here was a video of Haley BEFORE the big day.

Big Takeoff, then crash and Dragged through the Rocks.

Meaning he takes these beatings and just keeps paddling back out - Same Board with a SMILE:

Haley is quite the Timex watch.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Beasho:  I have read through your Maverick's threads over the years, and have never seen you describe how the hell you guys hold onto the paddle through those beatings.  I have had it ripped out of my hands in just 8 foot surf.  Admittedly Cape Cod winter sucking beach break.  But do you routinely hold it by the end, or by shaft.  Do you use it to help get to the surface?  I see Haley has his when he prone surfs through the rocks.  Any advice?
