Deck Pads on custom SUP
« on: December 12, 2018, 09:04:52 PM »
Does anyone have any recommendations for deck/traction pads for an 8'6" SUP?

I was planning on putting the Dakine SUP traction pad, but I have learned that they are no longer making them (for some reason). I would a clean look and a kick pad on the back. Any suggestions?

A ton of options with any of the Hydroturf pad. Sheets sizes, colors, textures, and tail pads. A little pricey, but it great quality.  https://www.hydroturf.com/sheets-sup/sup-surf
I've used the black with green grooves sheets and cut my own patterns out of the sheets.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I'm really happy with this one from Amazon (click here for link)...

...easy install, super comfy, nice grip, and at $45 you can't beat the price. Although it only comes in three colors (black, grey, or white) that might not match your custom exactly, but other than that a great pad.

I'm with talldude...get some sheets and cut a custom for your custom. I just get the diamond sheets and use the diamonds as a pattern to cut out. I like mosaics though. Mosaics give better traction, weigh less, and look good.
Long running thread here...for some reason none of my old pics there are showing up but plenty of examples....here's the nose of my Foote. These are bit spread out. On other boards when I'm doing the standing area I cut some bigger and place them 1/2" apart.
The old deckpad ultimate traction thread...29 pages, lots of examples of mosaics and artistic pads.

For the cleanest look and the best "board feel" I use Hexatraction.  I use it on all my boards.  More info on Hexatraction here:

That looks great TD!   Nice job.   Stoney,  remember years ago when 'deck art was the rage, for a time...

Sano,  I was looking at the placement of your kickpad?!  ...then, I saw the footstrap.

I-R,  You should do a search on traction.  Remember to pose a question like a lawyer - multi-versions of the same thing. (btw: I bet Dakine read the tea leaves.  They seem pretty savvy marketers.)

These guys have good traction pads: https://staycovered.com/collections/stand-up-paddle

not sure why it's not on their website. I have it installed on one of my boards.
10 pieces all together, good coverage for most of your sup.

This pad is very thin and light compared to the 5mm pads. I'd say the base is 2mm with another mm
for the pattern it self (dots).

Not cheap but was worth it. I got it on a discount but I think it goes for $70.
in progress...

$44.99?  Super reasonable price for a good pad.

There are some cheap deck pads out there that are ok, but the cheap Diamond Plate shit just kills my feet. It get stiff as the water gets colder. A lot of the China pop-outs come with the crappiest pads. All the Hydroturf pads are great quality. My favorite is the light grey soft long-diamond pattern. It's on all my distance boards.

I am a big fan of the OAM Boehne deck pad.  It is light and has traction for days... downsides are that some tenderfoots complain it is hard on their feet and I heard that it might not be closed cell foam but I have no issue.  I think Infinity may now make a similar Boehne design out of closed cell foam.

After removing a bubbled up 6 year old pad, I did essentially what Tall Dude does.  I used a Hydroturf sheet cut into a big comfortable standing area with a slightly more aggressive hexagonal pattern toward the tail.  This pad is just the brushed finish but it gives great traction with the hexes in back and it's luxuriously comfortable both surfing and cruising.  I'd do it to all my boards if I wasn't so cheap, lazy, etc...

Aloha Jim,
The hard part is getting the old pad off...looks like a nice job...but, seems like the pads that I have customized with multiple pieces end up being little sand traps...
We have lots of pads in stock that help to make a re-pad job easier...including a newer stock version of the OEM pad that originally came with your board...

Our stock 8 piece SUP pad set is lightweight…just 1.5# for 76″ x 26″ of coverage…closed cell EVA foam…non-H20 absorbing…highest quality 3M 9786 peel & stick adhesive…several layout options…comfortable…diamond grip traction…black…embossed PVC logo…we also have an optional stomper tail piece with integrated ramp on the way...

Last time I was in Blue Planet they still had a few Dakine pad sets. Give Rob a call or e mail.
