i think the T3 blocks the wind well, but cant really tell--it's always been warm in low water and air temps, in winds up to 20-25 knots

Question for the technobutter fans: does technobutter adequately block the wind?

All neoprene blocks wind, that’s not what makes you cold in wind. It’s the water on the cloth outer surface evaporating.

I surf with techno butter suit.. I get just as cold as any cheap suit when the wind blows. I switch to a smooth skin Neil Pryde windsurf suits when its windy. They wear out quicker, but it is the only way to reduce evaporative cooling.

Techno butter for me, is the most stretchy and easiest move around and bend over. Worth it for surfing only. My flashbomb collects dust.

Grovelled today in the Oneil Hyperfreak 4 / 3 Comp Zip Free. Windy enough that I was getting blown off by gusts.

Two CC refugees proning with me.

Theoretically, the lack of smoothskin in the chest, and the wind gusting to 25 should have frozen SharkBoy. No worries.

I have owned X-Cel, Billabong,  Quik, and the Oneil  is awesome.

As always YMMV.

Cheaper suits have to have cheaper rubber. Doesn't mean they are better or worse, no high quality Japanese rubber though.
Let it come to you..

I just put on my 3/2 short sleeve full-suit last week for the first time this season. Contemplated trunking it, but the frigid 55 degree air / 62 degree water was just too much for me ;)
Those 4/3 full-suits feel like a straight jacket...

The Rip Curl outlet is in town, so it's hard to pass up last years models at 50% off.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Regarding wind blocking and Technobutter For me seems good. I was out yesterday blowing 15-20 and gusting much stronger (blew me off the board a couple of times). Air temp about 4-5degrees C. The 5.4/4 mm was great.......stayed warm and out about 2.5 hours, but also wearing a guru impact vest underneath. Drying time is short.

I haven't tried the impact vest underneath. Does one need to size up a suit to do that?

Maybe if I stopped beer...

The swimmer yamamoto neoprene 1mm suits are used by waterskiers even in winter. OK, they do a very short session but the complete wind resistance means they're as good as a 5mm suit (for them). Plus they are cheap.

Maybe a sized up swimmer suit over an inbetween-season wetsuit would work. For skiing I have several thin and light layers I add or remove to my backpack. My outermost layer is a simple light [strechy] windbreaker. It paper thin but adds substantial warmth when on.

My 3/2 longlegs/shortsleeve wetsuit with my impact vest and a yamamoto rubber swimmers suit over it might be da dope. Especially as a wind resistance layer. Fo cheap too. I should try.

Apparently they are crazy easy to put on. Fragile however.

Anyone know how to repair cuts to a smoothskin wetsuit? There some kind of tape that works?

Hi Yugi,

These suits are so stretchy I haven’t had to size up to get it over an impact vest. One trick I have found however is to put the vest on, pull on a pair of boxer shorts up over top of it and then put the wetsuit on. The boxer shorts prevent the impact vest from riding up when pulling on the wetsuit.
