Hey sup’ers,

Just wanted to throw out a word of caution when/if you SUP surf Dohney. There is an older guy, mustache, always wears a hat, black full suit, and rides a red longboard. He is an okay surfer and dislikes SUP’s. Have seen him drop in a SUP’s a lot and he continued the same practice today. I was in position for a clean small wave coming in so I paddled for it, caught it, and saw the jerk on the inside swing his board to paddle for the wave. I was only a few feet from him with the nose of my board clearly out in front of him, he see’s me, continues to paddle, realizes he isn’t going to catch it so he quickly stalls, lifts the nose and swings it left into my legs. It didn’t take me out but it definitely pissed me off. I finished the wave, made sure he didn’t ding my board then paddle back out. He looked over at me, no sorry or even an attempt at an apology. I kept my cool because I didn’t want to ruin a fun session but man, what an A-hole. I sup surf or paddle around DoHo 3+ times a week so I see this jerk in the water a lot. Anyways, be careful if you sup surf near him because he is obviously willing to try to hurt people who sup there.

I've seen the guy.  Heard him yelling at SUPers who strayed a few inches north of the hammer.  You were wise to just let it go and not ruin your session.

I remember that guy from when I lived in Dana Point. One day I watched him go after another long boarder because he dropped in on him. It was a thigh-high day and this crusty dude literally got off his board, swam over to the other guy and tried to punch him. He’s a sad, miserable old man. I can’t wait to see him on a stand up when he can’t pop up anymore

I spent most of a surf session purposely blocking and out positioning that guy just to see him boil. He wanted to say something to me, but he didn't. It was a fun session;) All part of the DoHo fabric. Lots of people and not a lot of room.

Sounds like everybody remembers him. What a clown. I surf Doho maybe once every two years and I've had a run in with him. He dropped in on me and tried to shove me. Not wise. I fell on top of him. Oops.

So DoHo Jerk was out in the water again today. This time he got his chance and shoulder hopped me on a nice one and just looked back at me with not a care in the world almost trying to Alpha male me. I called him out telling him he was f-ing unsafe and a kook. He told me I need to yield to bathers so I asked him if he is bathing or surfing then he got mad and called me an f-ing punk and said he would wrestle me on the beach if I hit him with my board. I just laughed at him and reminded him that he hit me yesterday so he is the f-ing punk. Anyways, nothing good came of our delightful conversation other than knowing he will always drop in on a sup even if he is going to hit and injure the person.

I too have seen that guy...I just laugh at him, and he gets so pissed.  Saw him walking around the harbor one day when I was working on the Fire Engine and asked him if he burned anybody in the lineup today and he recognized me and started backpedaling . pretty funny.....full Richard Cranium !

A guy I work with has a great line he uses in instances like this...
"I've lost 47 fights in a row, so I guess I'm due,... let's go"

He's actually kind of a bad ass, with a really colorful childhood, a blackbelt, and a host of physical encounters he's been on the better end of.  I guess it's good to keep your opponent off balance.

Me?  I paddle away and stew for a while until I come to my senses.
