Leash to Suit Velcro?
« on: November 14, 2018, 02:45:56 PM »
Has anyone tried to velcro their leash to their bathing suit to keep it out of the water? Perhaps if one can get the size of the velcro tab right, so it stays on except when pulled (and hopefully not pulling ones shorts off)...

It seems like a regular waist leash belt would work better.  I can foresee all kinds of problems with a leash attached to your shorts.

Shorts yanked off by a really big pull from a wave?  Wedgie from shorts being pulled the other direction?  Shorts that are not up to the stress?  Cute ladies seeing you with a leash attached to your shorts?   ;)

Wow, talk about synchronicity. Karla Aguerra (Alex's wife) was talking to me about this three days ago. She knows I'm willing to expend energy working through ideas. It's a fairly big deal for foilers since you want a lot of leash to keep the board away from you in the rinse cycle, and you don't want to drag it. Most guys tuck a few loops into their boardshort waist, but what's a lady in a bikini to do? She had the same idea, and I said I'd work on it. I think it's a good idea and easy to implement. A flap of velcro that attaches to velcro on your leash.

So yeah, pay no attention to Zooport, do it, and then I can show it to Karla and claim credit. Otherwise, I have to pull the sewing machine out.

It could work with specially constructed shorts such as PBill is suggesting.  Attaching a leash to your regular, unaltered board shorts seems like a recipe for a naked swim.

Well it is done and i will let you know how it works.
As for losing my shorts: i am only using an inch of velcro. And i can experiment with using only a part of that. seems to me less likely to impart injury than my normal tuck into the shorts but one never knows until one tries...
I dont forsee doing this in large waves ...but when it is small i swear i can feel the difference in having my leash not dragging.

I have done something similar for a few years now.  First with my board shorts and then on my waist leash.

Actually, it started with a paddle loop I sewed on my board shorts - back when we were all
into that.  We have a lot of kelp here and I found I could loop the paddle loop around part
of the leash and tuck the paddle loop into my shorts.

Worked pretty well, but then I decided to try some velcro - so I sewed some velcro
onto my shorts....and the paddle loop (which I had made out of a stretchy girls headband I got
at the Dollar Store) would stick to the velcro holding up the leash.

Later, when it got cold and I started wearing a wetsuit and I bought a waistleash, I
added a paddle loop and a spot of velcro to the waist leash.  Worked the same way.

Finally, well I think the velcro I got was that Cheap Chinese Velcro you guys had talked about..
(had got it from the Dollar Store)....anyway, it wasn't holding that well anymore on the paddle loop,
so I added a strip of the other corresponding velcro to the paddle loop... - that sticks
better....and that strip I got off an old leash.  Eventually, I will remove the Chinese Velcro strip
that is on the waist leash and also on my board shorts
and replace it with some better stuff.

I use it to keep the leash out of the water...out of the heavy kelp we have and for less drag...and also up
off the board a bit for noseriding; however, as I move up, I have to pull off the leash and throw
it over, otherwise the leash is too short and I can't move any further forward.

Oh, I see.  Doing it in only small waves might work.  I agree about not having your leash dragging.

On the beach back in August I happened to notice a white string hanging from a bikini bottom that might be perfect for securing a long leash...

I have resorted to putting my leash underneath my waist life-belt. Now I feel like at least the life belt is performing a useful function :)......and it's more comfortable than putting the leash around either my ankle or just above my thigh. I do believe that both the life belt and the leash are legitimate,  but also they are a pain!

The idea is a weak velcro connection to hold the leash and release if you fall. Not hard to do. A patch of loop material on the shorts and a wrap of hook material in a few spots along the leash. Like those balls that stick to a target that kids play with.
