Different Quad templates...
« on: November 13, 2018, 08:02:55 PM »
I was looking through CL and noticed this Starboard Widepoint has a very different quad fin box placement. I wonder if anyone has any feedback on Starboard's reasoning for putting the side bites so far forward, or how it performs? I've seen it setup similar on thruster only boards, but not on a quad setup.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I took the dimensions off of various manfactured boards, they all seem to be a little different based on the board design.   Toe in, distance between fronts and back distance from tail, distance from rail.    I took a North Pacific 10 ft round pin Thruster / 2+1 design and added a set of rear boxs converting it to a quad.
I was stuck with the location of the front boxes and I positioned the rears 1.25 in of the rail and matched the front of the rear boxes with the dimensions taken of off a happy medium from a multitude boards.   It seems to work well so far.

Next issue is finding the right fin size that fits the size of board and bottom type, tail width.   I have found after yrs of testing surfboards and sups, different fins sizes and shapes, it easy to run to big a fin.   Remember to add all the fins area and compare that with the 2+1 set or single.   lots of fun if your into R&D    Lots of info on line from a host of designers.
The most interesting fins I tried were Aysemtrical Controlers,  worked well in fast larger hollow waves but were stiff in slower mushier waves.   I setteled on what worked best in 80% of the conditons I go out in.   Then every once in a while I change out everything out just to shake things up !    Enjoy your quest !

Looks like something from the time they were smoking some nasty stuff at Starboard headquarters ;D
I've seen few of those before, the board tracked so well it couldn't turn.

The fins are so far off they didn't even have to get rid of the original setup for the retrofit. ::)
in progress...

Yes deff sometime wrong on the Starboard, that’s if they indeed wanted that to be a true quad setup, maybe some funky windsurf thoughts going on  ???
