Wing boyancy
« on: November 12, 2018, 04:27:17 PM »
Hi guys

Just after the facts about boyancy for anyone has been through this process.
I have made a huge wing, but to keep the wieght down i built it out of polystyrene. Then carbon wrapped.
The only problem i have is the boyancy of the wing, it has that much volume that it pushes the board out of the water.
I was thinking of just removing the polystyrene and replacing with a more dense foam like the expanding foam that you put into cavitys.
How would the volume differ between the 2 foams?
I know polystyrene has heaps of air, maybe i need to set up a test piece.
Cheers

Hi,

“The only problem i have is the boyancy of the wing”
Some of the best foils ,like the Gofoil, float...
“it pushes the board out of the water.”
I thought it’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. Do you mean you can’t stand on the board when the board is stationary ?
“removing the polystyrene and replacing with a more den
How would the volume differ between the 2 foams?”
How can someone answer without knowing the exact products you used neither the volume of foam+ carbon/epoxy weight?
If you want it to be heavier just had some carbon or fiberglass, it would be stiffer at the same time and much easier to do.

You’re not joking?
Cheers

Nar not joking.
The only question is,  how would the volume of the different foams differ, one being EPS and the other expander foam.

Maybe divinycell would be less boyant than  EPS?.
The volume problem means the board sites out of the water at 45° with no weight on it.

If the size doesn’t change, the volume doesn’t change.

The only thing you can do is go denser which is heavier but I don’t think you’ll see enough difference if they are both foam.

Why are you worried? I’m not getting what the problem is. Ask he asked can you not sit or lie on it in the water and hold it down?

Pour foam comes in different weights.  But it does seem like it would be easier to just add weight to this one.

If it sits on its side like some kitefoil boards do that would be very frustrating.

Drill some wholes in bottom, Use an L-shaped wire on a drill to open up an area of foam under the carbon/glass.   Drop in some lead shot with epoxy resin to desired weight.  I myself would not care if my wing was buoyant.  My XL wing is already.  Once you are standing on(SUPer) it does not matter.

Thanks for all the replies
I think the lead shot or sinkers might be the go as suggested.
It only floats at 45°with no weight on the board.
I have made several boards, but have kept the weight down on these too they are only 6kgs for 6'3" and 7'2".
The foil weights about 3kgs.
I think the perfect think would be to use water inside the wing that would be the perfect ballast..

SS did you start with a mast and fuse and make the wing? Curious as to your methods. It looks great man.

Totally remember the molding now. Looks great. Know that a lot of the prone foil rigs float like that due to the smaller boards but I get why you’d want it to settle in the water for sure.
