2019 Starboard Inflatable Airline
« on: October 03, 2018, 09:28:00 PM »
Starboard has found a way to use the "stored energy" from the flex in an inflatable board. And here's me thinking that flex was a bad thing.

The energy flex, storage and return is rubbish in this context. Not only is it speculative (and that they have they not measured it), but if they did, they'd probably see it wouldn't return the energy consistently or in a vector whereby it would be beneficial.

However, some nice features there. If the ICF ever gets its worlds off the ground and has the inflatable class (it planned to), I'd race on one of these.

I’d race one of the Red Paddle inflatables instead - I’d trust the Red stiffening arrangement more than I would a dyneema (or whatever it is) string wrapped around the board.

Great to see that Starboard haven’t ditched their “porpoise-power” marketing nonsense yet though: every year you can rely on Starboard to give you a good laugh in September or October.

Shame they mention it really, because actually the board in use doesn’t look particularly flexy for an inflatable.

Boing boing boing! Dual use: SUP and trampoline, it’s a win-win!

I'm not sure I buy into to harnessing the flex energy etc, but anything that makes the board stiffer, whether it's a dyneema line or a carbon rod, is good progress.

It would tempt me to try the Starboard unlimited 18x26 - looking for more stability than my Red Paddle Elite 14' x 26 . I need a "mail-in rental" or something :D

I tried the 2018 26 wide and it was not bad for an inflatable but if you start putting a lot of up down sprint type stroke it states to bounce and flex which can get out of sync and mess with your stroke. It is best with a nice smooth rotating Larry Cain style power stroke.

If I needed an inflatable it would definitely be on my radar though.

I really like the nose shape on those boards. Finally, iSUPs began looking more as a hardboard and less than an inflatable bed.

Wondering if 14x 28 or unlimited would be a good all around travel board. Like if I go West Palm Beach with family, I would love to paddle canals one day and try to chase bumps on the Atlantic side on another day. Would it be a good choice? Would be unlimited right board for this or it's strictly flat water board? I already have 14 footers at home (Blackfish- for distance in the harbor;  Bark Expedition - learning to surf it) and I'm not sure if I want "pretty similar" board for travel, that's why I thinking about unlimited. On another hand, if one of 14 x28 boards is even called "downwind" - does it mean it should be good for open water and still ok on flat water?

1) I agree. I'd look at Red's stuff first. I raced one at an event last year and was suitably impressed with it.

2) It's absolute crap. The chance of someone being able to generate a harmonic oscillation...... on moving water....... and to get any energy back...... (which will be less than you actually put into it)...... in a vector of travel to be remotely beneficial is completely farcical.

The guy dressed in black seems to handle the board OK.

Is the packed board really that big ??  :o

Would it fit under standard (not oversized) luggage for flying with?

Tracking info says the package is 34x21x13" so I guess the sizes from Starboard are close.

Real images, videos and full test to come.
