WTB Velocitek Makai or NK SpeedCoach SUP 2
« on: September 30, 2018, 02:57:52 PM »
Looking for a Velocitek Makai (just lost one down-winding after hitting it with my paddle during a bail-out) or a NK SpeedCoach SUP 2.
I am in Canada so will require shipping.

I do not have either for sale however- having had both a Velocitek and SpeedCoach, I just wanted to chime in w/ feedback on both products in case you are not familiar. Velocitek Makai has great visibility on the water but is very limited: on water time/speed/dist- does not have/save tracks, workouts, HR... rather lacking especially considering price. The Speedcoach has waaay more capabilities is a much better value for $ spent. Has all of the above, interval training/programed custom workouts, stroke rate, etc. Cheers.

Thank you. I am familiar with both and agree with your general assessment.
The sleeker shape of the Makai is somewhat marred by the lack of a safety mechanism. I have found that it resists to anything coming from the front but it takes very little to take if out coming from the back.

I own both and found that both mounts are lacking to a point that I no longer use the mount
as the point of contact with the board but rather a heavy duty velcro. That way I can mount
either unit on the board, tethered of course.

I found the Makai to be more accurate and responsive as far as readouts, and I like the layout
better. Not to mention battery life.

For the more fancy stuff like stroke rate, computer upload etc I use my Garmin anyway so
not really missing it.

I think both units are overpriced, but for the $280 that I got the Makai I feel it's a much
better deal.

Well 340 for the Makai feels a little bit steep. But sp does 450 for the SpeedCoach. You just cannot win.

I guess it really comes down to the essential functions you need from the device. If the
Makai worked for you before and you didn't really wished you had more, than 340 is a lot
cheaper than 450.

That was my thought process when I needed another unit. For the functions both devices
cover, the Makai has clear advantage imo.

I have a SpeedCoach on order thanks to one of our prominent forum member :-)
I will likely be able to retire my Vivoactive refurbished watch before its battery dies and have everything I need in one package.
