Anyone tracking their paddling with Apple 4 Watch?
« on: September 29, 2018, 04:25:35 PM »
I am interested in whether or not the Apple Watch 4 comes with any kind of specific activity tracking for standup paddling and what data it records. Do you need to download some kind of specialty "complication" to do this? Interested in the Lte version so that I would not have to take out the phone to make it all work.

I tried the 3 and had to use Strava but it was not very accurate and does. To have any stats like stroke rate and dist per stroke

I ended up just getting a Garmin Vivoactive3 for half the price and it has a sup function that has full stats

Thanks....that is helpful to me. I am surprised that it appears the watch has limited activity tracking on the watch.

I am using the apple watch, but for surfing. It records waves and locations quite accurately and heart rate but not total distance -- I requested that, and they are thinking about it. What I do like is that I have the cellular model, and I can make an emergency call if I need to.

The Apple watch has all the hardware required, but the software is scattered. Garmin has the benefit of a focused approach. The iWatch has to be all things to all people. I find V4 to be actually worth having on my wrist all the time--not something I can say about my Garmin stuff, but no, it's not the best at sports tracking.

love the V4--dont love that my eyes are getting worse at reading distance, and the watch is a small format upon which to read anything--i really love it with reading glasses on!

in the lineup i can just read texts and see caller id, which is really all i care about when in the water--in winter i tend to ignore it rather than peel back gloves suit etc

havent seen need to track waves--hate fussing with anything when there are waves..............

downside for me is that it needs to be charged daily--not too big a deal overnight, but one more thing.....

in case i get interested, what is the surf software available for the V4??

Dawn Patrol works on my v3. It is really not fussy, and you can command it via SIRI. Another good thing is that it auto starts the water lock, which is handy if you forget and your hands are too wet to swipe.

I solved the Apple Watch band blowing off in surf issue.

Use the Apple Velcro band, then add one retainer like these
