I was out with a guy last year who lost his foil and it sunk.  Luckily, they found it the next day when the water settled down a bit.  It was a Naish.

More foils sink than float.

Moral of the story.....don’t ride boards with less than the very best track or Tuttle installations. Never ride stick on mounts.

Board "Manufacturers" should be required to FULLY explain how they have been installing their boxes.

Full Cassette - Should be Attached DECK TO DECK.

Tuttle Boxes better- But they also FAIL IF THE BUILDER USED EPOXY for Installation.  I have experienced this TWICE.  USE GORILLA GLUE.

Here was Mark's board Saturday 9-15.  Custom made F4 Foil lost to the Mighty Pacific.

And to my surprise Todd came walking by 8 days later saying "Look what I found."

NFW  :o

This foil clearly SANK.  Track installation BROKE.

The foil was in great shape.  It was originally lost in ~ 4 feet of water which would give hope.  But Mark had gone out and searched the spot where the foil ripped out from a SUP later the first day.   It must have sloshed around on the reef and LUCKILY moved into shallower water.

Waves had been 3 to 7 feet with a South swell for the first 4 days.  Heavy Northwest might have pushed it AWAY from the reef.

You might think one of the Boxes would still be attached but it must have torn off.  Apparently the brand of TRACK BOX matters as well.

Can you add a Dock's Lock Channel Plate to one of the two fin boxes (if you fin boxes plate) or a leash plug to the bottom of the board and then attach a short cord to the mast just in case of failure?

I used a dynema line from the leash plug around the tail to the top of my  plate mount masts.  I couldn't tell the difference and it gave me peace of mind.

Yeah, Opie’s got the jam if your foil sinks.

why not just install the mounts properly? seems to me that adding an extra layer or two of glass or carbon is easier than having your foil rip off and sink. im amazed at how little reinforcing gets used on most boards, an extra square foot of cloth doesnt weigh that much!

You are right, and that is exactly what I am doing on my latest repair.

The only way to figure out how light we can go is trial and error.  :(

Like beasho says, high density foam through the whole board. And chinook boxes, not futures.

Some people in the surf industry don’t even know what a Chinook box is. Just last week on this forum, in a classified ad, the manufacturer said, Chinook boxes. It wasn’t, it was something else. I wasn’t in the mood to call him out at the time.

Yeah, people think Chinook means good, which it sort of does, but not interchangeably.
