NC - Post Florence Safety
« on: September 24, 2018, 10:18:37 AM »
I was wondering how people make a decision about when to re-enter the water after a huge storm and all of the nasty stuff running into the ocean (pig crap, coal ash, sewage, oil & gas, etc.).

I was thinking of heading back out Wednesday, but after visiting Wrightsville Beach yesterday have decided to wait a bit longer.  Wind was blowing directly off the water and there was a strange odor off the ocean.  Didn't have the normal salty air smell.

Hope everyone else is safe out there regardless of how long they wait to get back in the water.

When the counties get back to something like business as usual they will do some water quality testing. I'd assume that's way down on the priority list. The Floodwater is nothing like most folks assume, it's generally extremely contaminated and will take some significant time to move off and be diluted. Take your time. People die from that stuff.

Just called my friends in Myrtle to make sure they knew.
They did but were still surfing yesterday. Said the water looked like a chocolate shake.
Pretty sure our conversation got him to reconsider.

No authorities are warning beach goers down there as far as he knows.
I just read that the facility that monitors water quality on the Myrtle beaches... is closed down because of the storm.
Hot and sunny.... good waves.
Hard to sit by and watch.

Hope they can navigate all the flood water and by-products.
It's not suppose to crest for 2 days (Sept 27)

Disgusting, dangerous water to surf in, may as well lick a toilet bowl clean.
I'd wait a couple of weeks after the flood waters recede.  Just asking for it otherwise.
It takes a quiver to do that.
