advice on Fin set for Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun 8'7
« on: September 22, 2018, 07:40:34 PM »
Lost one of the stock fins so wanting to try a new quad set up. I weigh 155 and surf mostly south shore Oahu so from here out this season it is mostly chest high surf i am in.
Heard good things about Jamie Mitchell Futures...any others you like?

I've been using Kinetik Racing JP quads on my Sunova Flow 8'10 for over a year now and am very happy with them. They are recommended for bigger guys on prone shortboards which I think translates well to lighter guys on SUPs. I weigh 170.

The pintail on that board provides plenty of hold, so try to find flat foiled quad rears to provide some release.  Unfortunately there are not many options, especially new.  Look for a used pair of 3.75s or 4.0s with a flat foil.

Different board  - I have a JL SuperTech, but I tried different fins to loosen it up a bit more, gain some speed, while keeping a thruster setup.

I ended up with the Blackstix 2+1, that smaller center fin makes it a bit more lively, I put the stock fins back in for bigger surf (above chest/head high).

interesting that you found the thruster set up faster and looser. I did too even using stock fins but everyone else I read says quad set up is faster ...

I should clarify - quads are still faster. I was talking in reference to the stock thruster setup. The Blackstix are faster and a bit looser than the stock thrusters (which by the way aren't 2+1 - I was thinking of another fin set).

Quads are still faster, I just like how the board turns on a thruster setup better.

I definitely agree too that the board turns in a more positive manner with thruster set up.
but I wouuld like ot see if i can get some more speed out of her in these marginal conditions

When I had my Stun Gun 9'2, I switched to quads for the same reason and it made a big difference speedwise. Overall though, the board was still slow in our typical marginal waves and I eventually sold it. I had Futures GL2's on that board.

Superfrank I imagine outperforms by a lot in these marginal waves?

SuperFrank is really fun on waist high waves. Carries speed and maneuvers well but gets a little shifty in larger waves. It doesn't seem to like big turns.

I had the 7'6 Frank out in clean shoulder high waves for three hours yesterday and it just didn't feel right, so I switched to the 8'10 Flow and wow what a difference. The Flow was tearing it up. I should have been on the Flow all along.

The quick turning ability of the Frank fits well into small waves but can feel a little awkward on bigger waves. It will surf any size wave but it's definitely better suited to the small stuff.
