Sum Bitch....Kenalu Paddle F-up
« on: September 19, 2018, 04:13:39 PM »
Noticed after getting home from a dawn patrol session this am that there was a little bit of water in my Wiki paddle so this afternoon I broke out the heat gun and warmed the shaft up....turns out I didn't heat enough of the shaft and ended up frigging twisting the carbon extender handle to the point of cracking/breaking.  F-me!  I forgot how deep the extender handle goes down in the shaft.  Note to self....heat a good 12-18" of the shaft dumbass before trying to pull out the old handle!

So, $70 later I've got another extender handle enroute.

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

My own stupid fault!  Okay, I feel better now! Whew......  ::)   :o

And don't twist it hard, mostly pull. You must have had it plenty hot for the handle to fail.

Yeah, I did the same thing a few years ago. Got in a hurry and overheated it and over twisted it. Operator error. Live and learn.

Happened to me too. Didn't heat far enough down the shaft. I was pulling and my Brother in Law started twisting, and it twisted the handle badly. I was able to cut off most of the damage on the extended handle and it is still good.

Me too. When I saw what happened I just pushed the handle in past the twisted part and now use it as a fixed length surf paddle. Apparently this is a risk with the longer length handle that we were not aware of.

Hhmmmm….I never thought about it. I have a couple with extended handles. I guess I've always been careful to heat it up sufficiently and I don't twist until it the glue starts to give slightly. Slow and steady I guess.

I did the same thing (too much heat, and twisting) to a buddy's QB handle that fortunately we were replacing, so...Phew!, lucked out.

After that though, and seeing all that epoxy the entire length of his handle, I thought about the glue that was probably on the entire of my extended handle...that was all the way into the shaft with really the "extended" part not being used or needed in this case.

So the next time I removed it very carefully to empty some water also...when I put it back in, I heated things up all the same, but this time only put the glue on the last couple of inches of the extended shaft near the handle, after already inserting the rest of it most of the way in first.

I've taken it out, and installed it on another paddle once since that time, and the removal was pretty easy given I didn't have to heat the glue the entire length of the long handle...and I had no problems with it previously in the 4-5 months of use prior to taking it out again.

That maybe the incorrect way of doing it, but it's worked for me so far, and is still holding strong with the "only gluing the top part of the handle shaft" method I again used a couple of months ago on the new paddle it's reinstalled on. Just some food for thought. :)

I put a piece of white tape where the extension goes to to remind me how far I have to heat the shaft

same as robon--had a hard time removing extended handle, twisted/wirnkled it, chopped it to a normal length handle--works fine, lost a few grams!

Why I love this place............tips, tricks and advice:

- only glue several inches vice entire extended handle shaft....ding ding!  VERY nice!
- pull, don't twist!!! ....common sense but how natural is it to twist!
- JimK could've saved me a couple bucks...F! $65 for the handle direct fromm source and $5 bucks for shipping. still haven't gotten a confirmation email that Kenula received my credit card payment and is shipping - I guess they operate on 5 business day rule or something.  Oh well, at least I've got a backup.  :(

I think shipping is still from Hood River. It's not a big outfit. When I was half owner I hired Carmen, our housekeeper, to do the fulfillment/shipping. I think she still does it. If you were here in Hood River you'd know Carmen--she's one of those folks that knows everyone. She'd just swing by and hand you your handle. We get kind of spoiled here. I'd guess half the wind/water sport companies in the world have a presence here, a lot of them are based here.
