Humbling Experience
« on: September 18, 2018, 06:45:13 PM »
I went out for the first time today and it was such a humbling experience after 40+ years of surfing.  I was thrown off most of the time but also got “on the foil” a few times for 3 to 5 seconds ride.  The board - King’s 5x20.5x3 40L.  The foil - KeNaLu Foil.  Btw, I’d on the helmet and the Patagonia Impact Vest.  Going back for the second session Friday.

Welcome to the humbled club. The longer you've surfed, the harder it will be to get your feet and body in the right position to foil. Unless you're a shortboarder. They don't seem to have much trouble.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Hey Rat - have you tried the King's foil yet?  Not sure which version Dave is on to but curious to hear some feedback on it.

RAT and SANO,  wish i could join you guys.  I am technically only on my third session, but tweaked my back earlier this week so may need to nurse it for a few days.

I'm still shortboard 3 to 4 days a week at the beach break in front of the old homestead.  Hopefully this is partially true.

We are supposed to get a small southern hemisphere swell, waist to chest, Friday so maybe either SUP or longboard or both if too big at Nuke for learning the foil.  I'm planning to be there around 7.

Why did you choose a prone board and not a standup?

I don't like the idea of having to worry about the paddle and the board after falling.  I converted my shortest SUP, a L41 7'0 x 30 SIM SUP, for foiling but don't like all that extra lumber past the front foot to keep down.  Finally, having to hold the paddle with one hand to open the chest seems weird, to me.

Added front pad with orange strip to remind me, being a back foot shortboard surfer, to get the front foot forward and center.

Nice, RatBeachrider. Better than my first try. Amazing feeling for sure. Oh, and that's the same foil I have!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Second round ... same results.  I need to remind my dumb brain to "push down on the front foot."  Third round Sunday.
