fin layout 2+1 for 9'8" SUP
« on: August 24, 2018, 08:20:09 AM »
I am working on a floaty pintail all-around 9'8" x 30" x 4" and am wondering about a 2+1 setup.

I have this layout from Robin Mair at Gearbox/Hanalei: Long box up 6", sides 16", 1" off rail and 3/16" toe:

https://gearbox.surf/resources/HFINS-2PLUS1-Layout-2018-WEB.pdf

I have a 10" Bahne box and 4 and 6 degree cant Gearboxes.

Does this sound reasonable? Which cant? I do not have any SUP or enough 'regular' surf experience to draw my own conclusions.

Thanks, J

Think about using all the fin boxes and setting up as a five fin board. I think the fins with less cant  go in the back......see link.......this link also contains the link to McGee website which many shappers use for fin placement.,having the option of running as a quad is good.....I recently added fin boxes to an 8’10” board (now five fin) and so far love it as a quad.

The layout Gearbox has sounds just fine to me. Long ago a builder here on the Zone used this formula for thruster/tri on his boards, to good result he claimed:
A 6’ (72”) shortboard has sides at 11” and center fin at 4”....to rear of box. His formula. For the sides, multiply the length of your board in inches x11 (yours 116) and then divide by 72. Gives you distance up from tail. Do the same for center multiplied x4 and divided by 72. On thrusters I’ve used this and been happy. Just used it the other day to set boxes on a 7’8” board.  Good luck!

FRP, thanks for the McKee suggestion.

I have a 8' prone board redone as a McKee 4+1. Before this, the board was a blue and white thruster with an overly wide tail. Tail block was added later after I missed a long-distance session due to a smashed tail with exposed EPS.

Is it true that McKee setups need 'juice' to come alive?

Biggreen, the math on the 116*11/72 is 17 3/4" and 116*4/72 is 6 1/2", so very much in the ballpark. Thanks for the formula!

The board is for my daughter for flat water messing around and as a collaborative artwork project...but I thought with side fins and a little extra volume 'Pappi' could take it out on small waves.
