SIC 12'6" Bullet - Leash/Cargo Net Insert Failures
« on: August 08, 2018, 09:58:36 AM »
I few years ago I purchased a SIC 12'6" Bullet SCC for flatware ands smaller surf days.  The board is light, fast and surfs really well.

Last fall I noticed at least 3 of the 8 inserts were corroding and water was getting into the board due to the delamination where the inserts terminate and meet with the top of the board.

If anyone has had this issue and/or has a good remedy for repair, please share.

Thank you
john

We’re the inserts factory-fit? I don’t remember the 12-6 Bullet coming with them (which doesn’t mean they didn’t, only that I don’t remember them).

This year, yes. There are cargo inserts.

A few years ago, no. There weren't cargo inserts. Not even last year.

Where did you buy it from?

Yeah remember firsthand comparing a 12'6 Bullet to the 14V2 when the V2 first came out years ago.  The 12'6 had factory inserts back then as well -> and each subsequent year.  This pic is from the 2015 SIC catalog after the 14V2 was named Gear of the Year in 2014.  Even before the cosmetic change back in 2013 the 12'6 had factory inserts.

You can see the 14V2 and 14V1 were not available with factory inserts -> but the 12'6 and 11 were.  Also the 12'6 and 11 could be had in both TWC and SCC.  The V1 only in TWC and V2 only in SCC.

We have a SB Touring pin with a bunch of factory inserts and have no leaks.  So what you have sounds like a manufacturing defect if 3 are now corroding.  You need to get that sealed up yourself or have someone do it for you.  May require pulling back the deckpad.

Every Bullet I have seen has the inserts - in the catalogs over the years, my neighbors (11' and 12'6"), ...

Bought at Ocean House in Swampscott, MA.

I really don't like inserts for cargo nets. It's too easy to crack the bond to the deck. Stepping on them will do it, as well as too tight a pull. If you're looking for a simple repair, just put NSI lashing points over the top of them.  https://northshoreinc.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=338&idcategory=93 They'll never leak again. Or you can abandon the tiedown function and cover them with aluminum tape.

PonoBill,

Thank you for the advice.

I never used the cargo net.  I will do a complete repair soon and epoxy / new traction where they now reside - without a cargo net.

The other issue I am having is the same sub-standard inserts SIC used on the cargo net are identical to the leash inserts (plugs).  There are 2 placements available on the Bullet's for the leash attachment.  One of those has definitely failed and the other seems to have failed as well.  There is dried salt residue around it.

The metal inserts for all these systems are corroding.  Since they sit adjacent to the outer shell of the board, delaminatation is occurring and causing water to enter the board where the hardware is located.
