Surfski Racks (car and garage)
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:31:52 AM »
Hi Guys,

We (finally) pulled the trigger on a couple of surfskis.  What would you suggest for car top (Subaru Outback) and garage racks.  Love to see how you guys are getting it done.  Thanks!

For those into DW conditions- which I'm going to assume you are, I'd definitely look into V-bar racks. They are hyper secure over the road, and the firm cradles make loading in windy conditions muuuch easier- can even do it solo.

There are multiple options out there if you search surfs v-bar rack. Here is one:

Those are Goodboy racks on that CRV.  I have a set (looking to get another) and they are great.  I've paddled near Phili with the guy who makes them and you could meet a nicer person.  I can barrel down the highway 75-80 and my ski or OC1 is perfectly stable.

I got a set of J hangers when with my first ski.  They work well but For the money, I use shelf brackets from Homedepot with a pool noodle (the thick ones) wrapped and tapped over it.  Probably $10 for each boat that way.  Mine are on my fence so I use a set of bungee to keep the wind from blowing them off (garage is only 19ft, grrrrr!)

Thanks for those suggestions.  I just saw that it looks like some people are using footstraps.  That looks pretty nice.  Is that pretty common/standard?  I used to use a little coiled bodyboard leash for OC and it worked pretty well.  Is that decent for skis?  How about vests?  I am pretty sure they are required here in the Gorge (although I don't know if it needs to worn or just on the boat).  What are you guys wearing if anything?

At the Gorge Paddle Champs race most of the cars I saw with surfskis on them had those V-shaped Goodboy racks. For the garage, come by the shop and I'll weld up some wall mounts. I make them out of scrap 2" tubing left over from roll cages.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Great.  I ordered a couple of those Goodboy racks.  Those look sweet.  Bill, I did some 70 inch Yakima crossbars so we should have plenty of room for a SUP stack for shuttling :).  It will probably take a few swimming sessions before we are ready to take a run but man am I stoked to catch some bumps again.   It has been too long!

Admin stoked sounds great.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
