Soloshot 3 with Optic 25
« on: August 01, 2018, 04:11:17 PM »
The Optic 25 is being discontinued so is on clearance now for $399.  Any thoughts on whether the 25x zoom on the Optic 25 is acceptable for beach surf videos and pictures versus the 65?

I always use my 65 on "Tight" (max zoom) and it reaches out real far....
so I imaging the 25 will do a pretty good job if your break is not 1,000 yards out.

My 65 just started to work perfectly with the last update, so the 25 seems like a good deal.

I have the 25 and the 65. Used em both w/great results. These are the very first pictures I got from the 25. It was the first time I used the new SS3 too. I've been extremely lucky in that my bundle has been strong from the start. Pretty much the opposite of Creek's experience. Hopefully the 25 will serve you well.

That's great to hear Rick, I have a 65 coming today.  Now I just need to get my but in gear and pay a visit to my designated SoloShot mentor, Marc da Surfercook!

Thank you all.  Nice to hear that the kinks are being worked out of the cameras.  Surfercook--I take it if you put the Optic 25 on tighter track settings you have enough zoom to get closer surf shots or is that where the 65 comes in?

Was loving the sound of this deal thinking my local lineup was fairly close to shore.  Google Maps however tells me it's ~1000ft from where I would set up the cam to the normal take-off.  Guess I paddle farther than I thought :)

Doh!  I usually paddle out to a point break about a mile out and the angle wouldn't be optimal for the Soloshot 3, however I figured that if I surfed the beach break that I launch from the 25x would be fine.  That said, after I read your post, I measured it and it is 1000 feet as well!

I test out the Opti25 next session and check it out. Haven't used it in months. I did hear that it doesn't have as much wind shake as the 65 because it's so much smaller.
I used the 25 for the second half of this video and the auto zoom showed a dynamic performance. Camera was set up only like 20 feet above the high tide line. The first half was the SS2.

Did you guys see Robert S's (BluePlanet), rig to minimize wind effect?

I'm thinking of using a similar set up on one of our lifeguard stands (off-hours).
