The best thing about shark sitings--uncrowded breaks.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Looks like the surfers have resorted to "schooling"......to increase their chances that it won't be "me" that gets sampled by the GW's.

Getting ridiculous here in Plymouth. A fisherman had a 16' GW near his boat a mile off shore....they red flagged and closed the beaches for awhile.... ::)

yikes a 16 footer--wow

is there a point at which large numbers begin to consider humans legit prey?

it's a bit of a conundrum to me--overfishing has been said to have driven sharks closer to shore in search of atypical prey, yet they arent hitting the easiest pickings?

much easier to hit a swimmer or a surfer sitting oblivious on the surface--than a seal that's flitting about, aware of the danger

Scariest thing is this on the Cape. I think the researchers are starting to piss off the sharks. I've always felt we are pretty safe looking so much like a vessel from below.....but maybe not.... :o

The sharks are not here for atypical prey....there is a friggin seal smorgasbord on the Cape and we're seeing a lot more here as well. The point that the fisherman was a mile off of has seals sitting in the sun frequently. It's the same spot some girls on kayaks had their boat bit a couple years ago while watching the seals. I'm starting to see them more and more in the bay as well. We used to just get harbor seals...now the greys are here as well. Last week we had a massive amount of food in the water in Plymouth Bay....stripers by the hundreds were everywhere, more seals than I've ever seen before, minke and humpbacks feeding just offshore, the sharks are there too.....they still don't want us.

So far I think the strikes are mistakes or exploratory but with more sharks they are bound to be more frequent. That video above has me wondering though.

Pono thinks I'm nuts for thinking there is anything to worry about here but is it possibile that this shows some behavior change caused by the researchers activities? Unlike most other sharks man has had contact with over the last 1,000's of years these sharks aren't being killed...they're protected...just getting chased and stabbed and chased again. I don't think we can recognize the difference between a mistaken attack and being pissed off but it worries me just a tad more that we look so much like a guy standing out on the bow with a pole in our hands.... :o

that is just a another day in Santa Cruz. I was a manresa 2 years ago working with a surf school and we had a 10 footer breach 50 yards from where we were. went in for a few min and we all just paddled right back out.

Well Stoney,
In answer to your question, does all the research affect behavior:
(same boat different day)

I remember when they said they wouldn't chum, then when there were no fish....they chummed

Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

People here have been doing much the same. But I still think that new video begs the question. Breaching in a seal attack....who cares other than its cool to see? To me the fact that they take a seal in the middle of 25 surfers proves they differentiate....a good thing. I've always seen that as indicator we don't have much to worry about. Going after a guy that has a pole and is pissing them off.....changes the equation.
