New leashes and ?
« on: July 18, 2018, 10:15:42 PM »
What do you all think of those new braided leashes.   Sup worthy? Or not?   What do you do to stop your leash from dragging when paddling for a wave?

What leashes are these that you speak of?

Don't all leashes drag in the water when paddling for a wave?

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I think it's pretty innovative, but so far they are only available in 6'.  Broke a leash in knee high surf yesterday morning, had to wade all the way back to the beach to get my board ;D

The funny thing was, I felt the nick in the chord with my hand before paddling out.

What do you do to stop your leash from dragging when paddling for a wave?

Years ago I sewed a Paddle Loop onto my shorts so I could much more easily swim with my paddle trailing,
attached with the loop.  LOL, of course, I've never really needed it for that - maybe used it once (when my
leash broke and I had to swim in for the board).....But, I do pull my leash up, hook
the paddle loop around it and tuck the end of the loop in my board shorts, to keep the leash out of the
water for less drag.

That worked great in the summer but not if I wore a wetsuit over my shorts.  But then,
I got a Waist Leash (which I use all the time now).  I sewed a Paddle Loop onto the waist leash.  Also,
on both my shorts and the Waist Leash, I've added a patch of velcro that I stick the end of the Paddle Loop to -
Now, thats what I use instead of tucking it into my shorts - it comes off easier which is what I want when I'm on the wave
and want to walk to the nose - I think I really only need to keep the leash out of the water during take off - less drag.

On the braided leash, I'd like to see a test that shows whether it is more resistant
to fin cuts or not.

I've never had a problem with leash drag when surfing.

I really don't believe that the cord can cause any significant drag.

I use 8 foot Dakines on my shorter boards and a 10 foot Dakine on my 12'6.

I surf in a kelp forest in very competitive conditions.

Really only an advantage for me when paddling and taking off,
I don't think an issue when on a wave.
If fact, I free the leash when on the wave so I can noseride,
otherwise it can hold my leg back.

Seaweed can be a drag.

Luckily, we don't have floating kelp on the east coast.

LOL....yeah...depending on the fin I'm using,
every once in a while a FacePlant!

I really like an strait up pivot fin.
Actually, my Reverse D-fin is a favorite.
But not good unless high tide.
