Come on down and see us in NE Florida in hurricane season (I've got extra room). On a good groundswell, we're hiding a spot that'll make you forget all about California!

So I guess I should change my screen name  :-\  Any suggestions?
"Zooflight"
It takes a quiver to do that.

grampy bubba?

Another event not mentioned to enjoy in your new home, red neck yacht club events.
They seem popular.  Water, beer, lifted trucks, rednecks, chew and dancing girls.
Utube has lots on the club.

I gotta get me a pickup truck with a gunrack in the back window and steer horns on the front grill.

These stereotypes are hilarious. As a native I welcome you and also want you to leave  ;) . The MTB is good and getting better as the trail systems mature. This will become your new favorite site,  I'm venturing a guess. http://www.tarheeltrailblazers.com/    Trail maps,  info, market place galore

.

Trips to Wilmington and Charleston are easy, timing of swell becomes the issue, although since you're retired timing is a lot easier. Swell seems to always be hitting on work days. BTW if you're driving around with horns and gun rack you'll get more WTF is wrong with him instead of fitting in. Charlotte is all about banking and real-estate. All the farms and agro  have been pushed to the hinterlands.

There's a fair bit of lake paddling , with a 10 mile downwind run on Northeast and Southwest wind days. The shuttle is a bitch though. see ya when we see ya

By the end of August, I'll be settled in, so let's go paddle!  I have always wanted to try downwinding.

You know I'm just kidding about the steer horns, right?  My kids already live in Matthews NC and my son-in-law is an executive at a tech firm, so I know it's the real deal and not actually a bunch of hicks there.  I plan to join the Tarheel Trailblazers first thing.  Looks like a great mountain bike club that's responsible for many of the great looking trails.  My screen name on their forum is MTBsurfer.

Yeah, all good Zoo, there are a fair amount of rednecks and hillbillie types. I think most  lay on the good ole boy /  farm type BS a bit much. Just cause you buy your clothes at tractor supply doesn't make you a farmer  :).  If you're going to be in Mathews then Sherman Branch will be a close drive for you.

May be a good time to take up wind foiling  8)

Look forward to turning some miles with ya.

Windfoiling sounds like a possibility!  Hope I'm not too old for it.  I was heavy into windsurfing in the '80s.

Well if you are going to spend more time MTBing than paddling/surfing you can go by VeloVille? Lame I know but I can't think of anything clever right now.  I do know some guys who've biked there and love it and always look forward to going back and they say Charolette is a pretty happening town.  Plus it will be eons less expensive than Newport Beach so money will go farther.

Wow, looking at the map of Charlotte, there are some really huge lakes and river links around there that go for many, many miles.  Does not look like any local shortage of flatwater boarding or possibly wake boarding.

Also this might be good time to take up whitewater kayaking:  https://usnwc.org/

Shit, I may need to head over there and check out the city myself.  California is spensive and getting more so.

I used to whitewater kayak many years ago.  With the Whitewater Center only 10 miles from my house, it might be time to take it up again.  Super good mountain biking and rock climbing walls at the Whitewater Center too, I hear.  Lots of fun outdoor stuff to do all over the Charlotte area.  Nice people, peaceful life, cheaper to live...just no local surfing.
