9'5 Steeze Video Review
« on: July 16, 2018, 07:54:03 AM »
Vids of my 1st day on it, then some different size waves over the past few months.

At first I rode it with the stock fins,  but it didn't turn me on.... it felt sticky.

I decided to give it another chance.... so I swapped out the center fin for a smaller 5.75" fin (more of a Thruster set-up)

WOW, what a difference.... it totally changed the board, so much fun!
Now it has a solid place in my favorites  :)

at 235 lbs (106 kg) I am at a "weight to volume" ratio of 1.35 (1.18 on the 8'10)
Lighter surfers will not find it as tippy as I do. Stable, but has the Sunova "low rail" dip.

The funny thing is.... it is very relaxing for long sessions, in less than perfect conditions.

note:
I have ridden the 8'10 Steeze (8'10 x 30 @ 125 liters) and found it to be a ripper!
So much smaller than the 9'5 but still an easy board to surf, considering it is at another performance level.

Creek - You are a SuperFreak!!!!!!

Sunova is lucky to have you.  Great slashy turns.

You make hat-cam super entertaining.  An inspiration to anyone over the age of 30 we should all be working to surf like you.

I got the same steeze, but its 9'6 not 9'5, primarily for my wife to flat water paddle. She likes it because it paddles great and light enough for her to carry and put on her roof racks. I have surf it several times and really enjoy it. Our surf has been pretty minimal lately, so I'm glad we have it. It catches anything, nose rides, turns off the tail and is a great all arounder. I've had it in some biggish surf and it is fast and fun. I will have to try a smaller center fin.

Oops! ha ha.... Tom, you are correct, it is 9'6, but it surfs like a 9'5  ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for pointing that out.... I gotta go change some search tags!

Thanks Beasho :)

@ Creek

You give a lot of details in our videos. I enjoy your comments on the fly so to speak. BTW, thanks for showing your foot stance while paddling on flat water. Ditto for showing the size of your fins in the 2 + 1 Thruster setup.

As always, thanks for sharing your video.

I made this short vid in response to a question about "low rail stability"
In chop, there really is an advantage to have your board down at water level.
As you can see in this vid, although I wobble a lot, I don't fall down..... and that is the key.

Hey Creek, have you tried the Steeze as a single fun? Try it, you'll like it.

@ Creek

Another nice video. I can really relate to those real small waves. Nice to see how you stand on the Steeze. I'm always looking at details to see what I can pick up and use when I'm using my own boards.

As always, thanks for sharing this video and all your other videos which you share here on the Zone site.

So I have  a 8’10” steeze and have a smaller back fin. How far back would you recommend to start? I am planning on experimenting but I guess I am wondering about the theory of back fin placement.

I had mine fairly far back.... in that set wave it was very solid in a hard bottom turn, but looser on a cutback.
It could have been moved forward for the average waves the rest of the day, just to get a bit looser.

I haven't really experimented enough, because I was happy where I had set it up.

great info.  Just what I needed. So, as I read it, experiment first with it back a ways for bigger and more well formed waves for the bottom turn, try it a bit forward if as it gets sloppier...

Curious about how you would compare the Steeze to the Speeed? Both have wider noses, fairly straight outlines through the mid-section, and pulled in tails. Both are great flat water paddlers. How would you compare the performance in the surf, especially in the 8'10" sizes? Thanks Rick.

Hey Nalu!

Great question..... and I will try to give you a reasonable answer.
I haven't surfed any Speeeds in over a year, and never back to back with the Steeze.

I had to think about it all day and rewatch my videos a few times to get a grasp on the head to head differences.

First off, I will say I know several guys who owned Speeeds and swear by their Steeze's now.
But that is a personal preference and not a statement as to which is better, since they surf differently.

8'10 x 30 Steeze may be a touch more stable than the 8'10 x 29 Speeed, by virtue of an extra inch of width in the Steeze, despite the 5 L less volume of the Steeze.... but I think any real difference would be negligible.

The Steeze surfs more "Fun shape", but rips pretty nicely in the 8'10 Size.
The flatter nose rocker and slightly longboard shape paddles faster, catches minimal waves easier and finds nice speed in low power waves.
In waves of consequence, it is easy to surf, but lends to a more laid back style.... smoother turns, bigger arcs and relaxed surfing.

The Speeed surfs more "Performance".
If ridden close to the tail, the Speeed will snap a turn quicker.
It will handle serious juice and steep, late drops.
The wide nose with lots of kick paddles well but a bit slower than the Steeze.

I surf the Steeze rather than the Speeed because I have other boards that I ride in place of the Speeed. The Steeze has a niche all to itself.... and I found out in Portugal that other boards that folks compare to the Steeze... don't. I struggled in waves that the Steeze would have been perfect on.... it's a well designed board that has a lot of fans.

If I had a choice between the Speeed and the Steeze:
Small or low power waves.... I chose Steeze
Waves of consequence..... I chose Speeed

Hopefully there is someone out there that has ridden both within a short time frame and have thoughts. I had a year maybe 2 between riding these shapes.
