Eastcoast weather mavens...
« on: July 25, 2018, 09:35:05 AM »
A friend who worked on this series of satellites sent me this link.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/GOES16_FullDisk.php

As a civilian, I asked him which is the easiest for a nob to understand.  He said; "Band 12" ...but he also uses 'Band 7'.

I like weather stuff -  https://www.ventusky.com/?p=36.4;-78.5;5&l=rain-3h ...is my current top pick.

I'm also heavily into weather sites. I have a ton of them in my Bookmarks. I've never seen the Ventusky weather site. I'm going to check it out once I live the Zone site.

Thanks for mentioning it.

hey wet--the times in the loops make me think they depict past hours, and then transition to forecast??

or are the loops all history, and i am confused by times from another time zone??

Whoa, that's way too complicated for me.

I just look out my window to see the water off in the distance, if I don't see whitecaps I go outside, and if it's not raining or too windy I go....if I see or feel any of the above, I don't.  :)

Winger...   It's the C'hits. Fun to play with all the buttons.  There's a $2.99 version for the phone.  It probably comes with the RT surf report.

WB...  I don't have a clue?! I had to ask my friend just which one to click on?  Unlike Slatch it's a half hour pack and 40min ride to find out there three swells competing with an inevitable side-on wind.   It's been a tough summer for people who can't make those short windows that open.

I don't own a smartphone. I just own an old fashioned flip style cell phone.

@ Wetstuff

I checked out the Ventusky site and it is nice!  :)  When checking out wave heights, Ventusky is more accurate than the Windy site for wave heights.

While I was checking out Ventusky and was looking at the predicted wave height info for some of the places I go on the upper Texas coast, I also went to my streaming webcam sites for those places and Ventusky was "spot on".

I added it to my favorite sites which I visit everyday. From now on, Ventusky will be my new "go to" site for wave height.

I've always enjoyed surfing the NOAA site. Amazing how much there is there to look at. They sometime have Beta of different viewing applications on there.

An old favorite that I still use...https://graphical.weather.gov/ click the map to zoom in...change to marine in upper right corner

I've been using Ventusky since last year sometime...pretty sure I posted it on here somewhere back then. Very cool and getting better and better.

And in all this I'm not liking what I'm seeing for Saturday's CCBC..... >:(

i am almost certain you steered me to windy, stones---somehow we both moved to ventusky--it's weird, the sites are so similar, makes me think a couple of partners had a dispute and launched separately

i find the ventusky wind stuff to be superlative--and round here it's often all about the wind

damned wind's had too much south in it for a while here---i see a few in water on cams, but they're fighting slop

Ventusky even seems to take into account local topography. Thankfully the forecast changed and we had great weather Saturday for the CCBC. But Friday night I was looking at the wind forecast for Sat and noticed that it showed a quick left in the wind from SSW/SW to S just as it crossed over the cliffs. I know from experience it does exactly that...the other wind apps didn't show the shift. The crew had a nice S downbreezer all along that section of the coast.
