even in the administration it was quite split re the paris accord pullout--bannon and pruitt pushed for it (quality guys!), tillerson javanka and others pushed to stay in--and usa debunks all of trump"s "unfair" claims--and usa today aint no democratic socialist rag, if anything it's right of center, but, hey this is about the environment--people of all walks benefit from sound environmental regulation

Not saying you have any affinity, just that you focus too much on the negatives that western culture and the US have wrought seemingly without thought to the alternative. The progress that we (humanity)have benefitted from wouldn't have existed or have been as broadly distributed under any of those.

I think we agree far more than might be evident in our discussions on here. Frankly i'd like to see the world coming together on all these critical issues but fuck...we're still arguing and killing each other over mythical sky beings. We are still ignorant tribes writ large in so many ways.

Don't worry too much my friend...the pendulum will swing to the left again.... :)

About 46% of the plastic in the oceans are fucking fishing nets. The insanity of someone who relies on the ocean for their living dumping their nets is unreal.

So international regulation for registration of nets, and an international DB where the perpetrators can be found.

46% of plastic in the ocean from fishing nets? That is FALSE. Over 80% comes from the land, & that is a conservative estimate. Where did you get that data from?! It is estimated that a garbage truck worth of plastic enters our ocean every minute... from land.

Blaming it on developing countries is a canard as well - it is the industrialized global north that sells products worldwide in plastic packaging. Countries like the Phillipines & Indo never had waste management issues before single-use plastic took over... it's not that they cannot manage plastic, it's that plastic is unmanageable. Look at a small island like Tavarua, it is literally drowning in plastic waste because everything they import comes in plastic packaging. There is no space for landfill. There is no infrastructure for recycling, nor would that fix the problem. That small island is not at fault, they simply show us a microcosm of a global problem.

In the U.S., we bury the problem in landfills thanks to ample open space, or send our trash to China to be recycled. And China no longer wants our trash, can you blame them?!

Just pointing this out to counter the idea that we're great stewards & they are not. That is uninformed, unfair, and most importantly, untrue.

There are no technological solutions to the problem of plastic. In fact it's much simpler - make less of it.

That starts with each of us beach-loving folk IMO. I have ditched single-use plastic in almost every scenario that I can control in my daily life, and it was not hard once I realized how important it was.

And it all started from paddling in the bay & seeing the problem with my own two eyes...

Apologies for being preachy but this is the work I've dedicated my life to, and surfers & paddlers are on the frontline for this necessary cultural shift IMO!

You are right. I read an article that cited some source without specifying. 46% of the great garbage patch is fishing nets. Not overall in all oceans.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-22939-w

Fishing nets is about 10% of plastics overall.

Just wanted to clear up the confusion I had, but it still isn't a trivial matter since fishing nets is the gift that keeps on killing.

clearly you guys see things similarly--one bad data point is nbd

and yes the irony of fishing for a living, and then dumping nets in the ocean is clear
