I am a surfer, kitesurfer and SUP wave surfer. We kitesurfer's used to say paddle surfer to distinguish a "real" surfer from a kitesurfer. Now we have to distinguish prone paddle surfers (think Kelly Slater) from standup paddle surfers. So I guess paddle surfer could work for SUP surfers .... but then we kitesurfers would need to a way to delineate between prone and standup paddle surfer. Good thing is not many of us kitesurfers, so no worries.

I also was trying to understand why to keep SUP (stand up paddle boards out of the ocean). Thought it was the usual tired "my ocean" argument. I watched the video skipping along until I heard single use plastics. Got it.

Guck. Everything she is using or carrying is plastic. Her nylon bags, her silicone mask, fins and snorkel. Her neoprene wetsuit (polymerized chloroprene) Her slippers. How stupendously stupid for Olukai not to realize that--and they probably do. It's typical for a company to point a finger elsewhere when they know they are part of the problem. If you don't want to pollute with plastics, don't buy them. Don't buy stuff packaged in plastic--even if you "need" it. Don't accept a plastic bag, even if it's convenient. Don't buy water or milk in a plastic container. Don't buy Olukai sandals with plastic parts, plastic soles, fake plastic leather.

Simple.

But no one does that. They just talk about how other people should fix the problem.

The problem is you.

Oh, and it would be nice if these folks fact-checked a bit before they preach. All the plastic is still here? What about the megatons that are incinerated to make power. It's oil, it burns, it makes a nice fuel. While they are talking about plastic pollution, everything I see in every shot is plastic. The T-shirts are probably part polyester. And feeling good about the stuff they do doesn't mean they solve the problem. It just means they feel good. Nice for them.

While the message in the vid is all well and good, the problem I see is that it's a message that appeals to, and is seen by people mostly living in the countries that have the best stewards of our environment.  Most of that plastic crap, I dare say are from countries that don't get the message, they aren't connected, and don't really care.
So the issue is, how do you educate those people who are hard to reach, and are unaware of what they are doing?
Therein lays the rub.
Not really happy about re-upping this thread, but I saw this today, it's a great example of what I was talking about.  Talking about this problem among ourselves (who are mostly great stewards) doesn't really accomplish much, the word needs to get out to the people and countries that don't ever get the word.
This is from Santo Domingo, capital of the DR, they don't get the word.

It takes a quiver to do that.

Talk is cheap. I like to think the majority of surfers care about the ocean and also are picking up and stewarding plastic trash. Personally, I'm an environmental crusader. Started many years in the late 90s ago after a surf and witnessed a sh!t ton of plastic washed up at my break. That was the first day I declared myself a self-proclaimed environmentalist. Gathered three huge contractor bags of plastic that first day and have been doing solo beach sweeps ever since. It's a great way to walk the beaches getting exercise, fresh air, and control our environment. I have a fb album titled "Garbage Bin" where I put all the pics of all that gnarly plastic.

...and if anyone gets a chance, please check out this documentary about how far gone we are regarding ocean pollution. After watching it at a local firehouse hall here where I live I fear for our planet more than ever.

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

I am trying to stay positive just hoping that someone with big bucks and the brain power to go with it will come up with a profitable way to deal with this crisis. The key being "profitable". When waste management companies can start making money selling power and/or products from the bad stuff they collect.....then things will start to look better. As Pono said,  we ARE all part of the problem and need to do our part where we  can. Just don't ask me to give up any  of my standup boards that are all made out of petroleum based products and could end up in my tuna fish if they get scrapped. Lesson....keep your boards forever and don't crash :).......... ::)

^ In addition to the profit solution, IMO this needs to be made more a part of common knowledge and consciousness for any remedy to gain traction.

I tend to think the news cycle and non news media (which feed public perception) focuses too much on human on human interactions, to the detriment of environmental issues.

It pains me to say, but maybe what this issue needs in today's world is for a Kardashian to adopt it. Only slightly kidding.

You're in luck Itchy. There's plenty of super dry documentaries out there for you to feast on.

I'm easy. I'm so in love with Kimi I do things 2 weeks before she tells me to do it. I spent the last 2 sundays selling re-usable and biodegradable wraps at the market.

i get a giggle from the "we are such good stewards" "and it's the developing countries that pollute" comments---

developed countries that are now economically powerful in our global world achieved their power through the exploitation of resource and humanity, with no regard for pollution and concern for the environment---our very power derives from our having engaged unbridled pollution for centuries--on the backs of less developed countries, many of which we trashed--check into bhopal india--there are many bhopal indias in our wake as we have established a globally dominant economy for ourselves

and if you think the likes of scott pruitt and ryan zinke are concerned with stewarding, you need to read past the headlines

who cares about endangered species??

consider that it's the profiteers who have gotten the earth to where it is--are they the right fox to clean up the hen house??

read and vote

"it's not us"---well "us" just dumped the paris accord--that's the message "us" is sending--"us" thinks carbon burning is aok

we've built of fragile glass house of recent on matters environmental --it's a damned shame and counter to the intentions of most americans--but we need to read more and vote more

Eastie...do you think that if the shoe had been on the other foot the world would be better off?....really? If India and it's caste system had been the dominant culture the world would be a better place? Or hey...how about Wahhabism...that would be fun..or even if WWII had ended differently...Nazi's, Imperialist Japanese...or Stalin with a massive industrial complex and nukes. We...humanity are making the slow trek out off the dark ages. Progress comes in fits and starts. We are still playing at this getting civilized thing.

I admire your passion for trying to make the world a better place for all dude but I think your focus on the negative that has occurred during the progress that western culture has brought skews your view.  So now as a progressive/socialist gesture we should just ignore the developing worlds dumping untold tons of plastics while we ban straws just as the Paris accords allows them continuing massive CO2 emmissions. I hate the politics of all this shit....we need to make changes across the board if any of it is going to be fixed. And yes the west has to shoulder more of the load, lead the way, yada, yada. I don't agree with us pulling out of it, but making this left vs. right and even developed vs. developing guarantees failure.

i am a huge fan of civilization and the collective successes of humanity, stones--and the US has contributed much positive to that good--that's the US i am proud of--and i accept that we arent perfect and rolled with the punches of history and, net, did pretty damned well, given challenges--we have good and bad in our wake, but i love our democracy and all it professes/seeks to be

and not sure where you get that i have affinity for stalin wahhabis hitler etc? i am a progressive democrat, but we dont espouse those leaders--try elizabeth warren, but get past the "Pocahontas" crap

i am currently disgusted with the environmental policy being effected in our names here and abroad, including brazen complete and total sellout to big money interests
--i have a hard time thinking that anyone who enjoys outdoor sports of any kind can be pleased with this

and yes developing countries pollute in some ways at greater rates than we do, and certainly need attention and pressure to get on board, but our our historical approach to the pillaging the environment is certainly relevant context for that discussion--

right now we are aggressively undoing progress we have made in our own back yard--the US environmental policy world has gone from swamp to foul sewer----and our back yard is what we control and it's where all good policy starts--then the message weve sent with paris accord pullout etc is what we're sending to the other back yards of the world--

this doesnt have to be, if people vote accordingly--that's the beauty of our democracy, which hopefully can still effect the will of the people--and for those happy with our current environmental policy sewer, vote that way, because i think voters are starting to smell the stench of the sewer and will turn out in nov--we shall see, but if the US enviro policy momentum underway continues unchecked it will disappoint me much, and affect us all---certainly out on our precious waters

i know this shit concerns you, stones--and i have always been shocked that careful environmental policy isnt a totally non-partisan issue--and i agree about the world seeking to make changes across the board, including developing countries, but tough to discuss when we are gutting our environmental policy here at home and sending awful messages abroad

Since there is a 4 year waiting period built into the Paris agreement, we are in-fact still in it, (and have a US delegation participating at every meeting).  Whether or not the US had been shoe horned into an unfair position with respect to the agreement as Trump intimates is moot.  The question that remains is, can we improve our relative situation within the agreement.  That does not neccessarily mean lowering the bar for the US, it could also mean raising the bar for the other participants. Getting the accord to a more equitable level should be our goal.   The accord should not have a disproportionate drag on anyones's economy including the US.

The good news is that the announcement to withdraw sparked renewed awareess  and demand in the US and abroad for more eco friendly measures.

Coincidentaly, the 4 year period ends on the night after the 2020 election.
