Thanks for posting that. It’s an unpleasant truth, but glad to be aware... or reminded.

I think they are using SUP as an acronym for Single Use Plastic.
A little tongue in cheek but it worked...as in it got me to Google stuff.
I did not know that Hawaii is getting so much of this too.

Those rubber message wristbands work much better, you can wear a multitude of them at once to prove just how aware you are, the more bands, the more aware.  It's too bad that many of them end up in the ocean and dumps, and they don't biodegrade worth a damn.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I knew we should be calling it "Paddle Surfing"  ;)

Humans have to deal with the plastic "faucet"
Even as we become more aware and slowly change our ways,  the emerging economies are many years from that point... it's going to get worse for decades.

We fished the oceans clean of fish..... maybe some clever person will come up with a truly profitable use (and resting place) for micro plastics that are filling the oceans, then more effective "harvesting" will be developed.

It's all about a profitable use for all that plastic..... governments are not capable of cleaning a mess this size, but the corporate entrepreneurs may be.

You did notice that this was a cleverly designed AD, to set the company up as morally superior, all while using sexy follow shots to hold your attention.

and sadly.... I am sure the SUPs message was more that tongue and cheek.

Creek, what other ways do you think a message like that can be communicated without sounding elitist? I'm not challenging, just interested in the ideas. I had trouble looking at the video too because of how it was communicated. I think the issue of single-use plastics is pretty damn important, but how do you make that point without turning people off?

Hi Icky.... I didn't say elitist, and I posed a possible way it gets fixed.
The message is out there.
We can talk all we want and change our habits and products, but we are just puzzle pieces.
Without all the pieces together, our efforts won't accomplish much.

Getting the word out? It's getting out.
This vid had value, and their logo will probably be the hottest "Surf shirt" in the world this year  ;)

The word out really doesn't matter IMO, it will only be solved when there is profit to be made from a solution.
It will be in the form of a viable bio-friendly replacement for plastic, and an industrial use for mining the existing plastic waste.

I think this is a relevant and valid message, "elitist" or not.  In fact it annoys me to see people complain about it.

While the message in the vid is all well and good, the problem I see is that it's a message that appeals to, and is seen by people mostly living in the countries that have the best stewards of our environment.  Most of that plastic crap, I dare say are from countries that don't get the message, they aren't connected, and don't really care.
So the issue is, how do you educate those people who are hard to reach, and are unaware of what they are doing?
Therein lays the rub.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Sorry, Creek if I misinterpreted. I have an issue with the syrupy nature of those videos too. I guess I don't like being manipulated into what to feel. Kind of like a horror move when the violins start screeching, which is the movie signaling to you, “Time to be scared now!” I wanted to get the opinion of someone who thinks differently than I, that I trusted (you).
