removing handle on a Kialoa paddle
« on: June 22, 2018, 08:19:59 AM »
I have been using Ke Nalu paddles for 10 years now and know all about hot glue.

I have a nice  Kialoa paddle that I want to cut down for my wife, but wondering how would I remove the handle?  I don't think they use hot glue....Can I heat it up?  What's the easiest way to remove the handle?

Many thanks in advance..

What Kialoa paddle is it? (type and year)

I’d recomend just cutting the shaft to the new length and buying a new handle and epoxy it on.

You can try putting the handle end of the paddle in a pot of boiling water and then try twisting it off.. This works well with 5 min epoxy but might not work with full strength 24hr epoxy.

Thanks DJ. I want to say it’s a Kialoa Methane or something like that. Oval shaft, medium to smaller blade. I m guessing at the year..maube 2011.  I didn’t know Kialoa sold components.  Cutting the shaft and installing new handle would be easy

Thanks again
Don

Usually Kialoa handles are epoxied on. They do come off. I've done it twice.

I cut the paddle to the length I want. Usually there is enough tubing left attached to the handle to put it in a vise. Then I heat it up with a heat gun and twist the handle off.

If you happen to destroy the handle in the process and are up this way, Cinnamon Rainbows usually has a few spare handles laying around.

Measure down on the shaft where you will be making the cut.  If it is as far down as the ovalized section, you will have to modify (ovalize)the opening in the handle accordingly.
