M2M today vs last weekend
« on: July 14, 2018, 04:34:38 PM »
Hey I’m trying to follow the foil sup races that happened last week and this weekend in Maui: the M2M.

Zane won last weekend and Kai won today.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between these two races? Were they the same routes? Just different weekends and different competitors? I can’t seem to find this information anywhere and I’m confused why Kai didn’t compete against Zane.

Can someone with local knowledge explain this? Apologies for my ignorance.

There are two M2M races. It used to be one but I guess there were few disagreements between organizers so they parted ways. Today’s race draws more international competitors where as past weekend is more like a local one.
Today’s race started at Honolua Bay where as last week was at Dt Flemmings park. Both are roughly the same distance around 26-27 miles depending on zigzagging.
I think that today’s race gives you points for those who care. So some people choose not to participate in either one or do both. There is really not that much else. Also, Molokai Holokai (last weekend) is for a great cause - helping Molokai kids. And I like that.

Today Connor won on an unlimited in 3:17 and Kai Lenny’s time on a foil was 2:17, exactly an hour less and a course record. Foiling has come a long way in a short time!

Does 2:17 beat the overall record, like for surfskis and OCs, too?

Foil guys are killing it - Ryan Funk was supposedly 3rd on foil after Kai and Zane and from what I could gather from livefeed Ryan was on a prone board.....how on earth did he get up on foil out of Honolua Bay???

And his only source of propulsion is his legs - to stay up for 27miles....I have no words.

Here is small video teaser from last week crossing. Swell was just monstrous once we got out in the channel. And the last part about 7 miles or so wind just died on us.

I had a chance to interview Zane two days after the race, a lot of the questions here are answered in this interview:
