OEX is a good choice, also try West Coast Paddle Sports https://westcoastpaddlesports.com/index.html

Both are close to the city of San Diego

I've rented several times from Mitches Surf shop in La Jolla....good selection of SUP's for rent.  And Mitch is an awesome guy!  I would either Sup surf at La Jolla shores or Tourmaline (Old Man's)....Great spots!

Have fun!

You should check with capobeachboy (Chris Koerner)......we had an awesome time paddling with him at Baby Beach...and he provided some excellent boards for us to try!

Thanks for the local knowledge. It'll help make the trip "funner." If any of you ever need So. Florida knowledge, feel free to hit me up.

Lajolla Shores in late June or early July is usually ankle to knee high surf and knee deep in tourists.  The stingrays arrive in large schools just in that time period ( google for stingrays  lajolla shores ), in the last few years there have been a few days of mass sting events right about then.   Right then a jewish youth group arrives with three or four large vans of about 30 teenage boys who do beginner surf lessons all day in the break where SUP surfers usually hang out.  Bottom line is the surf is meager and the crowds are large.  Don't say you haven't been warned.

Yikes, sounds like my first trip to Costa Rica! (Four trips later, I now know to stay away from Tamarindo.) So ... San Onofre then?

I live about 4 miles from some of the best surf breaks on the West Coast, so I am a little bit particular about conditions, crowds etc.   If the surf is really good on a pumping south swell San Onofre will be very crowded and long wait to get in.  On an average weekday,  not a big issue.    It depends where you are staying in San Diego.  San Diego City proper hotels  are  kind of a pain for getting to SUP friendly surfing spots, except maybe Tourmanline ( it's crowded in summer too).  If you drive up the Coast Highway from Torrey Pines North to Oceanside there are many spots where you can park for free and surf fairly open areas.  If there is a south swell some of those spots will be excellent.  The State Park parking lots like  Torrey Pines North and South, Sea Side, Cardiff, San Onofre etc charge something like $12-15 for a day pass.  If you can use the pass at different parks it might be worthwhile but on a weekday there is usually free parking along the highway or at some of the breaks in DelMar, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside.  On the Fourth of July weekend I drive down to the beach in the dark, surf and get out before the crowds arrive. Summer Holidays and weekend parking can be a big hassle  in San Diego at the popular beaches.
