I knew my SUP mania would pay off..

Part of the Ranch will be open if you can make the 2 mile paddle.

Just read this in the LATIMES

Thanks for the heads up.

"Hollister Ranch, with rolling hills and a chain of reefs and scenic points that produce perfectly shaped waves for surfing, contains 8.5 miles of pristine beaches, a 2.2-mile-long shoreline preserve..."

"The settlement — signed by the California State Coastal Conservancy and the state Coastal Commission on one side and the Hollister Ranch Owners Assn. on the other — grants the public a roughly three-quarter-mile section of beach, accessible only by ocean "via surfboard, paddleboard, kayak or soft-bottom boat." This beach is about two miles from Gaviota State Park beach."

I wonder how you know where the three-quarter-mile section they are opening up is.

I think it's COHO point or something like that. I took an inflatable there with some friends about 30 years ago. Great right point.

I desperately want to just pull a Kenny Powers and show up on that beach in cutoff jeans and proceed to redneck it up a bit.

Between this and the Swami's thread, you guys aren't really selling me on California.

Oh yes, Cali is a wonderful place filled with generous and welcoming people...and I do mean "filled"  (Don't really mean the part about generous and welcoming)

I wonder how welcoming the locals will be at the Ranch.  Wonder if it would turn into a more upscale Lunada Bay scenario.  Lawyers and injunctions rather than rocks and violence.

Not a done deal and paddling 2 miles DOES NOT give you access to any break at the Ranch. The 2 mile paddle would give you a small stretch of sand for a picnic and walk on the beach. You could have done that before the proposed agreement. Public access below the mean high tide line has never changed nor has the attitude of the Ranch owners for better or worse.

^ Correct me if I'm wrong but one can surf at any break at the Ranch one is willing to paddle to. It's the the land above the mean high tide line that is off limits, except for the proposed portion, which should now be called "Settlement Beach".

In the mid 70s I surfed it once by hiking/paddling in from Jalama Beach and once by Zodiac from Gaviota Pier. Big fun, way before crowds on a weekday. A guard threatened us but did not find our tracks scrambling down the RR tracks at 0 dark thirty. Need to put that on my bucket list. Two miles is pretty easy on SUP. That hike was a ball buster. From the south we surfed a spot locals called Lefts and Rights that was clean & going off. Good memories.

Isn't that area sharky? So the 2 mile paddle may not be that convenient.

Could be fun to get a large group together and make the journey with the sole purpose of annoying and agitating the homeowners.

Ive sup'd every wave there and even razors.  Got into it with the famous lawyer and the famous beach boy. Bunch of threats with no backbone.  Just go and surf what you want.  Theres a set of reefs just south of razors (zippers?) That are really fun when its 10ft plus.  Theres a set of reefs just south of lefts/rights that also goes off at 10ft plus. Nobody will bother you on those two spots

Better yet, go foil it, that will piss those assholes off,  hahaha

Unfortunately lots of folks are too bust comparing, trying to keep up, are over-worked, over-stressed, haven't much left in the tank... turns 'em into lazy sheep.

The funny thing is, California is absolutely littered with heaps of natural beauty, empty places.... yes, even waves. All it takes is an independent spirit, a little  research, exploration..... initiative.  Even in the midst of the areas of urban sprawl, if you can manage your schedule off-beat from the hordes, there are near empty waves, trails, fishing... whatever to be found.

It is all too easy for ones wheels to get caught in the ruts of the well-worn path- but that ain't there the gold is. Making your own way whether it be intellectually or recreationally has great rewards.  There are waves as good as the ranch with public access and few people, less hassle.
