SUP Foiling/Surfing in San Diego area
« on: May 30, 2018, 04:57:43 PM »
Any good spots to SUP Foil in the San Diego area?  Gonna be in Oceanside on the 11th of next month to surf, probably staying in that area for the night.  Trying to stay closer to San Diego airport before I fly out on the 13th but want to be somewhere near a SUP/ foiling friendly spot.  Any recommendations?  Mahalo 🤙🏻🤙🏼🤙🏽

Lot of folks from down there make the drive to San Onofre on a somewhat regular basis, and unfortunately I've not yet searched out foil areas down there yet.

But as far as surfing goes, the Oceanside harbor can be fun at times, and a little further south Terra Mar Point is fun, and Boneyards even further south is a nice wave to play on most of the time. Some love Cardiff, and San Elijo, but I've never had much fun at either of them simply because of crowds or poor surf...but truth be told, I don't get down south to often, so it's a rather small data base that I'm referencing from.

Good luck in your search...
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

Cardiff works well. There's a knot of people usually at the sandbar on the river mouth, but that won't matter much for you. Go fifty yard further south and you'll have lots of waves to yourself. Several foilers play there.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I would stick to San Onofre.  Contrary to the opinion above, foils are not being warmly welcomed at San Diego surf spots.  Saw an unfriendly message written on the windshield of foiler at Cardiff.   Boneyards and Terramar you could probably expect a very negative reception.   Lifeguards kicked out foilers at Lajolla.  If it were me I'd just bring or rent a regular board and surf the better San Diego breaks with no drama.

Imperial beach is empty
Most of coronado is empty
Back side of point loma would work
You could paddle around  jetty at oside and foil DMJ's
Bring your passport a short drive across the boarder and you could go to Pemex at north side of rosarito (its a sick long wave that im sure nobody has thought of)
You could paddle around baja malibu and south.of that.
Punta san antonio has a very long mushy right.
Several hundred empty reefs from popotola to la fonda,  if theres a proper south, you could connect several football.field rights from calafia down to k55
Back to CA:
A good spot would be south of the power plant at san o
Park at trail one walk down the hill and go north. Towards power plant
No.reason to.surf sd proper as stated above

And Noooo i ddint give away anything thats not all on Wanna surf

looks like you're goodforsomething.   :P that was a seriously comprehensive list of foil spots. I can't imagine surfing all of em...err i mean foilin' em. Today I surfed my new sup right alongside a chill foiler. It was so cool to see it up close like that for the first time.

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Looks like a really nice new board.
The guy on the foil looks solid

I think if your up for the drive, the best foil wave is sitting on a sand spit just south of abrejos. There are three points then the river mouth.  Its very "fishy" and ive only towed it,  i woulnt want to sit in the water waiting for sets.   but the power is there and its a very long wave.

Im looking forward to this new avenue of wave riding, i have several spots in mind that would be a blast.

Punta camula is a super long mush burger.  Kinda tricky not getting your car stolen there though, haha

I scored it used on Craig's. $300!

That foiler is one of the best surfers we have here in NJ. And one of the first really good foil riders.

I had a car stolen out of an Atlantic City Hotel/Casino parking garage years ago. The car actually turned up two days later a few miles away in a movie theater parking lot.

I’m heading to San Diego this weekend to catch the south swell. I was thinking Del Mar, or if I have to, San O. I’m open to ideas if someone wants to point me in the right direction or better yet come join me.

I stayed at Moonlight Beach and seemed like just to the north of Moonlight woulda been good for the foil...mostly because there was never anyone out there. I would love to join you on foil! But I better learn how to do it first. I learned how to snowboard, windsurf, and sup surf all by myself so hoping this foil thing will go the same.

Surfercook.  I'm coming to San Diego specifically to learn how to foil surf.  This will be my first session in the ocean.  I'm super excited, but I need to find a break that is far away from people and has a somewhat reasonable entry into the water.  Some of my favorite SD spots are pretty tricky to get down to.  I can't imagine trying to get down to some of them with a foil strapped to the board.  We shall see.
