Ten foot and over!
« on: May 20, 2018, 04:47:21 PM »
Anybody surfing a 10 foot or longer stand up board out there?

Lately, it seems like all the attention has gone to micro sized boards the barely float.

I've been watching some videos to remind me why I started stand up in the first place... to have fun.

Yeah, for sure. After going steadily smaller for some years I’ve now started going bigger. My last purchase was 11’6”! (And before that 10’.) Put simply, I have more fun on the longboard style boards. I can go where I want, away from the crowds, get in early, and surf the wave forever. In my last surf session I covered just over 11 miles in 2hr 50 mins. Since all I was doing was surfing the wave in and then paddling out again, I guess this means that I was actually riding waves for over 5 miles in under 3 hours. No way would I have been able to do that on a 7ft board. Somebody else, maybe. But not me, and still be grinning all the way. Big boards are a hoot -from the things you are supposed to do (cross-stepping, nose riding etc) to the just plain fun (coffin rides and all that larking about). It’s reminded me of all the advantages and fun of SUP that made me take it up in the first place, 11 years ago. Dave Kalama’s “spin’n and grin’n” vid sums it up perfectly, for me.

Just sold my 8'6. I don't think I'll ever go under 10 foot again. Probably settle for 11
for my next custom board. Super longs glides is really all I care about.
in progress...

My goto SUP board is a 10'4" Foote Triton--bulk fun. Of course generally now I'm on a 7'2" foilboard, but that's not germane.

"I don't always surf, but when I do..."
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I had a few SUP boards in the 8' +/- range the last couple years but got a demo 10'2" Dogman model from DEEP Ocean Boards last fall and it has been a savior in this crappy California winter & Spring we've endured. It really does it all and I get so much more out of my sessions mixing it up with hard turns, noserides and gliding over the flat sections to the inside reforms. Plus I made it shark proof.

I surf so rarely, I can't even justify owning a surf-specific board. I ride my 11' all-arounds in the waves. Lots of fun in the small stuff.

Does my 9'11" ripper count? I love that board! According to the Paddle Surf Hawaii website it's the best one board quiver you can own. Good in one to ten foot surf! Just had it out today. But I still enjoy my eight footers.

I was just checkin' out that same board in South End! Looks nice! I was afraid to ask how much!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Still surfing my Pearson Laird Surftech 10'6" - my higher performance long board.

Also, my 10'1" Jimmy Lewis Black & Blue - more traditional "log."

I think both work very well where I surf and they both handle a wide range of surf
and size, other than probably a faster beach break.

I was looking at an 11 footer for more glide but hesitated since it won't fit inside the van.
Of course, after the fact, I kind of wish I'd gotten it.

The Laird is 29.75" wide and the B&B 31" wide.
I'd like to try something longer but narrower for more glide.

After reading about all you guys going to lower volume,
I'd also like to try a longboard with lower volume - hoping I could sink the tail and get 10 over.
These days the B&B seems pretty wide - I'd like to try the narrower one or similar.

Jimmy Lewis Black & Blue Noserider 10'1"x31"x4.25," 164 liters, 24 lbs, 1 box
Pearson Laird Surftech Longboard 10'6"x23"x29.75"x18"x4.375," 154 liters, 24 lbs, 3 boxes
Takayama Ali'i II Surftech 11'x21.375”x28.5”x17.25”x 4.25,” 162 liters, 26 lbs, 3 boxes

Sub, I have the 9'6" x 28" BB and it really feels/rides like a classic nose-rider.

And SC, anything 3' overhead is a longboard in my book (and the rule book).😀

Like Pono my go-to is the 10-4 Foote. I went shorter, down to 8-4, but I'm taking off with the shortboarders when I'm on it. Not the ride I'm looking for.....at least not most of the time.

I've been getting used to my custom built 11'1" x 30" X 4.5" @ 173 liters One World with 5 fin boxes on flat water by experimenting with different fin setup combinations combined with different fin lengths as well as different paddle lengths with my adjustable length 75 square inch paddle to suit my 5'8" height. All of this experimentation is leading up to my first foray into sup surfing the smallish waves which are prevalent here on the upper Texas coast.

What got me interested in a long length sup for my second board was watching this video below of Scott Mckercher sup riding a 2014 year model 11'2" x 30" x 4.4" @ 174 liters Starboard Blend with 3 fin boxes in medium and small sized waves.

Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

A couple years ago I bought a 10' Coreban Icon. It's been my go to board in just about any size slopey waves. It's 10' x 29' x 4.5 and about 160 L. I run it as a quad. It has thin rails and a lower volume pulled in fish tail. Super fast down the line with a fairly flat rocker, but flip in the nose for late drops. The vacuum wood is really bullet proof. It's been on the rocks a number of times. I've yet to do a repair on it. At 245 lbs, it's still a bit of a sinker for me.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Longboards have always maintained a prominent place in all my quivers for the past 54 years.
Why wouldn't you ride one?

In the right waves or conditions, for me, they are the best choice.

This week 3 LB sessions..... too many jellyfish with 6' tentacles in the water..... big old 10'2 x 33 was the wise choice on 2 different days.
Very long, small reef break..... 10'6 x 30 was the call.

Shortboards only got 2 sessions.

Longboarding is a style unto itself, and it compliments a shortboard by keeping surfing fresh and exciting.
