Shortening a Ke Nalu paddle
« on: May 15, 2018, 05:03:55 PM »
How have you guys shortened your Ke Nalus to 71-ish inches?  How do I do it if all their shafts are tapered?  Thanks for your help!

I just heard from Lane that all I need to do is use extra glue.  Have any of you done this?

My shortest kenalu is 75", so extra glue works in my case. Not sure about 71" though - might be pushing it although I think it might work just fine.

Do the shafts continue to widen as you get further toward the blade?
Lane said he’d had some OC guys shorten them to 50.

I've got my KeNalu shortened to 70" and it's been fine.  Just use a fair amount of glue all around the handle insert.  I did have some issues with the Extendable length handle due to the extra taper but the regular handles are fine.

I've cut the shafts all the way to canoe length and used them without anything more than extra glue. I didn't expect it to work, but it wasn't a problem. I've also made kid length paddles. I generally use the extended ergo T for those kind of aggressively shortened paddles to give the glue some extra area to hold, but no problems in any case.

Have shortened a couple down to 68. I use a glue gun, preheat with a hairdryer, and slather lots of the yellow glue.

No issues at all!

I've shorten my from 92" all the way down to 90". Works fine ;D
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Yes but then you have to bend too much and it hurts your back :-)

Does anyone have the stats on the length of each Ke Nalu handle?  That is, how much does each handle add to the overall paddle length?
