Foil Repair
« on: May 10, 2018, 10:09:01 AM »
Just received this foil from a friend and am asking for repair suggestions. Sadly this foil is not very old and the damage was done on land. Makes me want to cry!

Well, I had to get on it. Drilled and epoxied a fiber rod. I hope to be able to extract the broken fuselage from the tail tomorrow.

Agreed!  (Whoops you submitted this while I was writing)

Your fuselage is otherwise toast.  You might salvage the tail wing but I would drill out the fuselage and insert a carbon or steel rod with epoxy.

Then sand down and wrap carbon around the joint.  From my days at Boeing they suggested 1/4" is all the overlap on a good carbon layup so you should go at least 3/4"   ;D

Given that the carbon wrap will be around the external diameter of the shaft there should be plenty of stiffness and mechanical advantage.  It become one piece but it should be 100% functional again.

Thanks for the info Beasho. Thanks container. Looks like it will be a one piece and I hope the tail is correct now ....might try it before I fully glass.

I am very happy with the repair using an old windsurfing batten, chopped fiber, epoxy and silica. Put quite a bit of pressure on it with my foot and saw no issues. Now, it's time to get a 20 inch leader of fishing tackle and attach to each foil screw then give it a go. If it flies right, then I'll finish the repair.  :)

I suggest you sand and paint the joint a light color so you can see cracks easier. I might even do a dye-penetrant test after you give it a good workout. I have no idea how much force the stabilizer has to manage, it seems it might be quite a bit in transient load--like pumping.

Worked beautifully! Time to grind out some of the fractured carbon, re-glass, bag and heat. Got lucky!
