I gave in; we are moving to NC. Want to buy my house?
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:30:57 AM »
I decided that family is more important than surfing daily, so I'm selling my dream house of 37 years.  Here's the MLS with pics of it https://matrix.crmls.org/Matrix/Public/Portal.aspx?ID=55704504531 If you know anyone who might be moving to the area, please let them see it.

I know I'll never have something like it again.  Walking distance to several good beach breaks.  Flat water paddling right from the back yard. Really mixed emotions about selling it.

Things that are helping me be less miserable about this move:

1. The area we are moving to has world-class mountain biking only minutes away.  Another sport I love.  Certain neighborhoods have great MTB only a few hundred yards away.
2. I'm getting some sort of surf bum, camper van and will spend a good amount of time cruising the NC coast and sleeping in my van.  Maybe I can follow SuptheCreek around.  :)
3. The National Whitewater Center is not too far.  I can try my hand at whitewater SUP and kayaking.

Well that sucks. The plan to just rent it didn't pencil out, eh? Nice digs.

Thanks, PB.  The thing is that if I sell it and add it to my other savings, I can buy a house in NC and retire at 60 quite comfortably.  Also, there is considerable marital tension involved.

So the trade-off is:   Happy wife and retiring early vs. surfing every day.

It honestly was a tough call, but the retiring part put me over the top.  I'm hoping that the absolutely crap surfing conditions we've had this winter have not skewed my judgement.

Beautiful place but FWIW I'd do the same. Time (and harmony to spend it in) are more important than locale....so long as the locale is reasonable....and you can get a surfer bum van and follow creek..... :)

Enjoy NC....plenty to explore, and bring that van up north for the summer and say hello.... :)

Cool house. You know what they say, happy wife happy life, and nothing rhymes with happy husband.

Stony and Tom, thank you for the confirmation.  It's a tough call.  I definitely plan to head up north and drop in on you guys.  I'll let you wonder if I mean "drop in for a visit" or "drop in front of you on a wave."

Who knows.... with an early retirement, maybe your net lifetime session count will be higher!

...and change in life (made by choice) can often be a good thing... You'll have fun  :)

It sounds like you might be moving to the Charlotte or Asheville area?  Unfortunately most water sports require a drive, but you’ve got great flat water paddling on Lake Jocassee or Lake Norman,  white water rafting and kayaking in the Nantahala Gorge, and like you said, massive amounts of mountain biking and hiking trails.  Four hours to Charleston from Asheville, eight to the OBX.  If you want to try river paddling, check out the SC “flatwater” rivers——really cool.
I hope you like NC——there are some great people to meet, and many beautiful places to visit.

Does "who gives a shit" ryhm?  :o

And that's a damn nice place you've got.  In the area you are looking at, you could have a very nice home for a small fraction of that.  My retirement plan is the 10 year younger woman I'm about to marry.  Unfortunately my house is worth about 1/9 of yours.

My only problem is massive capital gains I will have to pay.

Given the videos that Alex posted of Dave and Austen foiling in NC I'd say it might be time to take it up. Crap waves = fun.

Get a house on lake Norman. Get a boat. Wake Foil the boat. Surf foil when at the beach.

Surfing on the water is dead, unless a hurricane hits.

Get loyal to the foil.
