small crack repair on a Starboard brushed carbon
« on: April 22, 2018, 04:04:27 PM »
Hi,

I hope someone can offer their advice.  A gust of wind blew my Sprint blew off my truck rack yesterday.  It landed on the truck next to me before landing on the asphalt.  Remarkably no damage other than a 1 inch crack in the footwell.  I noticed bubbles coming out of the crack today before paddling.  Its about 1 inch long.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to seal?

Thanks
Mike

I should have searched the forum before posting the question!!  Plenty of advice over the years.
Thanks
Mike

Yes, and for penance you have to post step by step reports of the repair with lots of photos.

The hardest part is the initial digging into that carbon goodness gone bad. Go for it!

Make sure to dry it out and don't use it again until you seal the crack.  The best way to seal it quickly so you can get back on the water is Ding Stick Epoxy putty.  You can always go back later, sand it and glass over it, this is how I fix small dings and cracks in my boards:

If it is just a crack, it can be hard to seal. No enough area. So if it were me, I would grind along the crack to make a V-shaped trench and then fill that with with the "stuff" of your choice. DingAll Suncure Epoxy is  a good choice for small jobs. No mixing needed.

Covering with a small piece of fiberglass would be the ultimate fix.

Between my boards and my RC planes I tend to do a fair amount of fixing work. More so for my planes than my boards but the tech is similar for both. I always keep good quality surfboard epoxy around. There are lots of good ones but I use Resin Research (mostly kwik kick because even that isn't very fast)

It is thin and clear and can be used for everything from glassing to patching. For patching or filling, you just mix it Cabosil or micro balloons or other various fairing fillers. If you have a Tap Plastics nearby, you can get the fillers there.
