Watching how quickly new short prone board foilers get good is making me crazy. I think SUP folks have a lot of habits that are hard to break. I'm used to moving all over my board, especially my back foot, and controlling the board with weight on the rails. Needless to say, that doesn't work well with beginner foil technique. People that are coming from short boards are used to having their feet bolted in place. And they're just a heck of a lot more flexible and skilled than I am.

Watching Daily Bread surf his prone board is remarkable, his turns are beautiful and precise. It makes me want to get a prone board, except I'd either never make it to my feet or I'd spend three days recovering for every day of surfing.

Thanks Bill  8)

So let me ask you this did you start out SUP foiling then riding a foil surfboard. If so how many sessions on the SUP before you transitioned? I've SUP foiled a few times and it's just way too much board to fly and I hate holding a paddle.

PS: Can't stand how SUPers throw the term "prone" around - prone surfing to me is bodyboarding. And prone paddling should be paddleboarding or "arms only" (Dan Mann came up with that one) since many paddlers are on their knees most of the time. No going back at this point as manufacturers have adopted it. So lame.

I guess the main question is can you or do you surf a small surf board?

I only use the term "prone" on here so that guys don't cry that "SUP surfing is surfing too."

But drop knee body boarders will be mad at you too about "prone". ;)

I started out without a paddle and prefer it.  SUP foiling has it's place in my rotation.  It's usually when I don't feel like paddling out on my shortboard the .75 mile out spots (which is rare).  I probably wouldn't own a SUP foil board if it wasn't for the guys I foil with usually.

So yes, I too don't like holding a paddle while flying.  It restricts shoulder and arm movement when turning, it's like surfing handcuffed.  For what I lack in paddle power I make up for in manuverability and I can ride smaller volume boards.

Capobeachboy ... I've been looking at a 5'6 Lost RV for a prone-foil board.  Plenty of flotation for me at 31L.  The only concern is that it is on 2.38" thick.  May be a 5'0 but thicker at 4 inches.  See you at SanO.

On another note, I've decided no longer to classify what I do as "prone foiling".  How I paddle into waves never needed to be defined until SUP came along.  So from here forward, i'm just gonna be foiling.  I'll let you guys define your "SUP foiling" when discussing your activity.

Thats all.. ???
