Prone Foil
« on: April 13, 2018, 01:20:40 AM »
Yea i know this is a SUP foil section, but there's nothing else out there, so you're stuck with me for now.

Couple pics over the past couple months.

Cool Pics.
Did you prone paddle into the waves? If so did it require much effort?

Yes, I want to know also if the pop up is weird or are you mostly in the wave when you pop?

I love seeing you dip that rail man. I'm seeing this progression on Instagram and it's clear that you can turn these things way harder than people have been. Keep pushing.

Great pictures!

The laydown option is getting more and more interesting.

This video of Sam Pa'e taking off on the front half of a wavestorm demonstrates how much lift is coming from the foil.

Despite his size, and small area of the board, it looks almost surreal as he is gliding along.  All due to the wing lifting below:

Yes and yes

It takes less effort than if I was on a similar sized surfboard due to the amount of volume of the board to handle the tuttle box.  My board is 3.5" thick, and that thickness is through most of the board, not just the tail.

You guys with the paddles and SUPs have it easy, prone is more work paddling into and back out.  But that is soon to change, I have a 4'8" on my radar that i should be able to pump back out.  Can almost do on my 6'2" in the pics.  Just too much board.

I wouldn't call it weird, not much different than a regular get to your feet process.

Yes, what Sam is showing, and many SUP board makers are learning, is shorter is better when it comes to board length and foiling.  I surfed harbor yesterday and Dave (Kalama) was on his latest creation that was a 5'6" SUP.  There's a direct benefit to lift and manuverability as you go shorter.

Great info man. If you watch the west coast foil club on Instagram it's wild how fast they can pump back out.

can't wait until summer swells start hitting southern california, looking forward to some footage that I'm positive they're going to foil.

I tried to foil the inside of the harbor last summer, the left you see there.  The swell direction was not working very well.  You had to take off as close as possible to the Jetty and then aim at it.  Once up and on your bottom turn you could turn away.  Myself and another surfer took turns.  He got some good ride, I got some good crashes.  It was just too much information to process for a beginner foiler.  There were a couple of really good set waves that came through, I Barneyed the take offs.

Awesome foiling and photos.

I haven't had much if any desire to go back to prone surfing in the past 2 or 3 years.  Watching prone foiling I have the itch, but only on small days with no current.  I suspect on the bigger swells when the current is freight training SUP foiling will be the call.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Agreed!

Seeing the advantage of a small board is overwhelming.  Certainly on small days, but as many of you know, I am always dreaming about the bigger days as well.

Watching how quickly new short prone board foilers get good is making me crazy. I think SUP folks have a lot of habits that are hard to break. I'm used to moving all over my board, especially my back foot, and controlling the board with weight on the rails. Needless to say, that doesn't work well with beginner foil technique. People that are coming from short boards are used to having their feet bolted in place. And they're just a heck of a lot more flexible and skilled than I am.

Watching Daily Bread surf his prone board is remarkable, his turns are beautiful and precise. It makes me want to get a prone board, except I'd either never make it to my feet or I'd spend three days recovering for every day of surfing.
