Sanibel Island Downwinder

Last Wednesday me and Yuval (burchas) did a downwinder from Sanibel Island to Bonita Springs. Winds were NW 25-32 mph. 3-4ft seas. Wind direction was spot on with swell a little off to the side. We still had a great time. Thanks for watching

Nice downwinding video. Nice background music too. The video sure wet my appetite for me to be on the water next week.

BTW, since it was a long DW, I noticed you had what I think was a VHF radio on your right hip. If I'm correct on my assumption, very smart of you to carry that with you.

Nice!  When my wife and I run over to Sanibel from Fort Lauderdale to see her parents, we paddle as much as we can.  It was great to see the lighthouse as you headed out.  Also, the way the water over there turns sandy colored when the wind is churning it up.  One of her parent's neighbors paddles and we know another guy on the island, William.  They take us on adventures from time to time.   Thanks for posting

@Night Wing - Thank you. Yes I had VHF radio with me this time since this run takes you quite far from the shore probably 3-5 miles out. And I normally tune to ch 16 and listen to coast guard calls like paddle boarders in distress So at least I can report that we are OK and just having fun. But yeah when it is a little hairy then pfd and vhf are around my waist.

@Weeble - Thank you. That color of the water is due to the shallow bottom. The first time I wiped out miles out - I was standing on my feet in the middle of the gulf ))

@laszlo - Thank you. We don't get these often. During winter months we get maybe 3-4 days like that a month and then in the summer it all goes quiet.

For that wind and swell direction it worked out great. 300-310 degrees works if you are trying for Bonita 1. Having done two crappy runs before this one was definitely worth the time. But if wind is 320+ then bowditch is totally fine.

That surf nosed Bullet is such a classic DW ride.  As long as you keep it on the verge of pearling -> it will catch every bump.  But does require fore aft trim like you demonstrate.  Great vid.
