Life of Riley
« on: March 05, 2018, 08:17:21 PM »
Crazy storm we had here in NJ. Winter Storm Riley was spawned in the Pacific and grew to record breaking proportions by the time it migrated to the East Coast.Tidal flooding was quite extreme in many parts of long beach Island as I can atest to having driven the 10 miles from Surf City to Holgate on Sat, Sun, and Mon. The surf reached epic status on Sunday which had many of the top pro surfers on
the East Coast traveling to LBI for the excellent conditions we were experiencing. I was quite fortunate to get to surf here all three days. I was awe struck by holgate this swell...the sheer energy of just the drift was amazing. Combined w/that long period large swell and the relentless sideshores it was extremely challenging. Holgate car prk and the lineup were jammed w/pros...a ton of cams shootin too. I have quite alot of mixed media from these past three days and the edit will take a while. Put a few frames together for a preview.
There's a video on Stab magazine w/Brett Barley packing a tube for quite a distance. funny thing is my board shows about half way through. My leash broke and the current carried it away quite fast.
Stoke on, Zoners! cross posted ins sessions for additional stoke!  8) I totally screwed up the dates on the fotos so disregard.but the names of the days are correct...uh...duh! should take a while to edit the 60 GB or so i have from this swell!

Nice set of photos for this storm. Looks like you got a lot of sup surfing it. Liked the short video of the "wave" too.

Thanks for sharing.

Great shots Cookie - glad you scored.  Travelled upstate on Saturday to ski the powder dumped onto the Catskills hills though with several resorts closed due to power outages everyone made their way to our local (Platekill). It was a zoo, but glad the mountain had a solid day since it lives on the financial edge.

I made sure we got back to surf Riley on Sunday and Monday in Long Island.  Waves were clean and the lineup in Central LI was basically empty.  Mostly head and a half to double overhead sets rolling through with some great lefts. I grabbed a couple shots yesterday before paddling out. Caught about 10 waves in an hour before sunset last night including a barreling 100yd left that led one of the two people I was sharing the lineup with pumping his arms in the air as I pulled out clean...

Good vibes in the water, though the beaches have been scoured here and one of the dunes near Gilgo looked like it was almost breached.

Riley still giving back.  A few days ago I thought today would be leftover seconds or thirds.  I was the only SUP out so no pics with paddles.   Not easy for me,  pesky NW wind early am, so choppy.  Got a few good rides,  way too many kook falls.   I have never seen a wave break outside like this one.  JP

Our local "Point break" which was the focus of much media attention is featured in this Brett Barley video. If you pay close enough attention you will spy my SOLOSHOT and then my loose board (which got carried away rather quickly after a leash break). Also featured are a few of the local crew who have been surfing here for years and charge hard.
