SUP-n-Surf FOIL Speed Competition
« on: March 03, 2018, 08:11:45 AM »
Love the competition, but this should also give some insights into Foil capabilities:

https://www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/

Ocean Addicts are running a hydro-foil surfing speed competition.

For this comp, we are focusing on maximum speed achieved on a hydrofoil surfing a wave.

Your longest wave foiled will be recorded, however, it’s the fastest surfer who gets poll and sits on top of the leader board.

We encourage foilers from all over Australia to register there PB’s Heck why stop there!….We want foilers from all over the world to register their times.

Rules:
  • Strictly NO tow-ins. To qualify you must paddle into the wave either Prone or SUP
  • To register, post a pic of your top speed on the Ocean Addicts face book page and we will then add your name and your top speed to the leader board below.
  • Post a clear photo of your app or your GPS device. We need your full name, surf break, top speed and distance you foiled.
  • Every time you record yourself beating your PB either going faster or getting a longer wave, post your pic up on the Ocean Addicts face book page. We will then update your score.
The fastest Foiler wins and holds the title.

need to get the surf app working on my fenix 3 not sure what I did wrong, wondering if not can you just set up a sup app with a auto stop start at say 5mph and do it like that?

My entry from this morning.  I woke up and the buoys were bigger than I hoped 9 ft @ 15 seconds.  I used to get excited but now wish it was a bit more manageable FOIL size aka smaller.

I took a look at the Ocean and thought 'It's not that big.'  Well it kind of was.  Chop factor 9.5/10.  I was falling 2X for every wave attempted or even caught.  Taking off on 6 to maybe 8 foot shoulders and then having the size build under my feet as the foil was speeding up - HOT, HOT, HOT.

Overfoiled on plenty of waves.  One great 415 yard ride.  Foiling this distance in Choppy conditions is like mogul skiing.  It cooks your thighs pretty quickly.

GoFoil IWA in stormy juice @ Mavericks USA. 23.6 mph / 37.8 kmh, 76 yards - short smoking flight  100% alone as usual.

I am kind of glad nothing broke:

Well well well....looks like i have a reason to dust off the Trace Tracker.  Last time I used it I think i went 21mph, and that was just inside the harbor.

There's a certain right hander here on Maui that's dubbed the fastest wave on the planet.  We'll see how it goes out there.

Only problem it's blowing offshore 90% of the time which is not ideal on foil.   ???

I am interested to see how fast these foils go.  I hit 23.6 mph on 2 waves and was LIT UP on the GoFoil IWA.

Piros suggested they can go faster, maybe 25 to 28 mph, but the fastest I have ever recorded was 25.2 mph on the KAI foil.  For the most part bigger waves are faster but I checked and hit the 25.2 on a day that was just 5 to 7 feet.

Gofoils are NOT built for speed, even the Kai. There's some kite tech out there that's much more leading edge as far as speed goes. Mast thickness is a big deal if you want to go really fast, and so is the foil shape and thickness. You need enough lift at near zero AOA to hold you and the board up, and no more. You'd need to be below the intersection of the lift/drag curves, preferably at the maximum ratio of lift/drag.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Gofoils are NOT built for speed, even the Kai.

Because it is shaped like a Cessna Wing!

Here is an interesting perspective.  I have used my TRACE now for 300+ Sessions.  I record the Single Maximum Speed for each session, the board, the estimated smallest wave face caught to biggest wave face caught (e.g. "today was 5 to 7 feet" for example). . . .  Grouping the waves into FEET Rounding Up with average of largest and smallest = 4.5 --> 5 Feet.   I found the following comparison between FOIL Max and "PLANK" board Max.  I now calls anything that surf using a board on the surface of the water PLANK Surfing  8)

As you might expect the Foil TOPS out @ around 23 mph where the Plank keeps going.  But the PLANK too appears to have a TOP Average speed of around 27 mph.  I have excluded outliers which typically means << 4 waves per hour often the result of huge conditions aka take out Mavericks waves.

Further dissection of the FOILS only shows an interesting result for the IWA vs. KAI foil.

The IWA appears to be able to sustain an Average Maximum of 22 to 23 mph in 5 to 9 foot surf.  This vs. the KAI has more of a stepped up basis until it matches the IWA wing at 7 foot faces.  Mmmmmm   ::)

Granted I was learning when I had the KAI but I have ~ 80 sessions of data across the 4 wings.  This may be what makes the IWA such a fun design.  It gets up and goes in small surf and keeps on trucking in the bigger stuff.

Note that the Maliko 200 Tops out around 17 or 18 mph.  Granted I haven't taken it out in any bigger stuff because that is where the IWA tends to shine.

^^ If that record of 27.8 mph wasn't documented then it didn't happen. That foiler, whomever they may be, can gloat in obscurity and buy themselves a beer. Beasho's record stands and he should continue to enjoy his buzz.

I have a friend claiming he did 27.9 out in front of my place. We'll see if he can come through with a screenshot.
