What's the deal with Ocean Beach?
« on: February 17, 2018, 04:02:19 PM »
The "Would you paddle out? Barreling beach break..." thread got me wondering...

Are there specific breaks at Ocean Beach? Or do you just look for wherever it may be working on any given day?

Do SUPs congregate in one area over others? North? At the park? South?

In general she's always changing and checking her several times a day pays off.

South end usually more SUP friendly, fatter and empty peaks to be found.

I'll meet you there if I can.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Thanks Clay... I'm always happy to have a starting point. Hopefully I'll be down there a few times in the coming months.

I feel like the waves get bigger the further south you go but my buddy sitting here told me I’m tripping. I just go out wherever I feel like it and where it’s not too crowded and chase the peaks. If it’s overhead or bigger it’s usually too much work to get out. There’s usually a SUP’r or 2 out and if not, I’m big and old enough now I don’t care about getting heckled by the younger guys and as long as you follow etiquette it’s usually all good.

It was a different story when I was younger and used to sponge there a lot tho. Almost got into way too many fights.

I surf South Sloat for one simple reason:

if it's too crowded, I can walk (or paddle) a 1/4 mile south and have the place to myself.   If you go regularly, people will get to know you and you won't have any trouble with crowds.

on bigger days on low tide, you can surf the outside peak while all the shortboarders are on the inside.

Thanks guys.

Off topic a bit... I still think it's so damn weird that there is antagonism in the surf zone... Not talking just about OB, but in general.
