GoPro Fusion as a paddle cam??? Test Video
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:08:24 AM »
99% of the time I use a paddle cam I am disappointed and then don't use one again for a long time.

A motorized gimbal might work if they figure out the waterproofing and get the weight and size down.

I have been confused as to what the fuss is about 360 cameras.  Then it registered that I can take a patch from the 360 view and make a regular HD video:

Thoughts?  Is this view watchable?  Better than the usual paddle cam shot?
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

@ Clay

One of best paddle cams I see video wise, are the paddle cam videos from DavidJohn. He makes some great paddle cam videos. He has a new paddle cam video on the (Australian) Seabreeze site if you want to check it out.

I don't want to post the link to it since DJ is a registered member on the Zone site and I don't want to steal his thunder. I'm guessing he'll post it  sometime later on here.

Clay:  I like the video a lot but (to me) at $699.00 the Fusion is at nearly the same price point as the SoloShot3 (w/ 25X) which give the all important view from the beach.  Having said that, I'd gladly watch any/all video shot with just about anything.  I'm saving for a SS3 w/ 65opti and hopefully by the time I have enough saved up they'll have the issues resolved.  Holding out luck for Spring.

Thanks for posting and would love to see more Fusion experiments!!!!!

Clay:  Question - most of the GoPro advertisement video shows footage which crops out the camera pole.....is that pole a special gopro product?  I'm basically wondering if a SUP surfer could eliminate the paddle from footage on a paddle mount using the Fusion software(?????)

Thx

Good question!  I'm testing this at the moment, I suspect it's possible and working out whether or not it will be to cumbersome.

I am partial to paddle cam views but was motivated to look into 360 cameras based upon this video from Piros.

I think the ability to rotate the shot from 'curl' forward to 'down the line' would be spectacular if the resolution plays out.

Any more video or experience would be appreciated.

Full Review of Fusion.  I am not a fan of the fogging if that is a real issue:

"Invisible" paddle - GoPro Fusion Video
« Reply #8 on: February 22, 2018, 12:09:57 PM »
I did a couple land tests to see if the paddle will "disappear" and make the camera look like it is floating.  Yes it does!  So I took it surfing yesterday.  To get it "perfect" and look like there is no paddle the camera needs to be almost directly above/below the end of the paddle and inline vertically with the paddle.  I made a quick mount that is parallel but offset by a few inches, so part of the paddle can be seen, or it appears and disappears as the paddle flexes or I change hands.

Editing workflow takes a lot longer.  I am reminded of digital tape and needing to "capture" it to a hard drive before editing.  The 360 footage needs to be stitched together before it can be edited in Premiere or other editing software, and takes hours to render.  I am familiar with After Effects and 3D software and keyframing so for me that part of the workflow is easy and straight forward.

Beasho - for your foiling vids I think a 360 cam would look great.  The camera is bit heavy and taking it into beach break has been a bit awkward.  For small waves or for waves where I can let go of the paddle and can use it as a crane cam - it could be really fun and get some cool shots.

As far as I fogging,I haven't seen any.  I am wondering if that is salt water drying on the lens when it is hot climate?  I noticed salt "fog" a few minutes after dunking the camera and then having it in the sun, re-dunking before each ride clears it.

Interesting thread Clay.... it's always good to see tech that helps produce watchable video!

This shows promise, especially when they get it reduce to "Sessions" size  ;D

I have the perfect mount for it.... made by wetstuff, years ago.
Now I just have to get Geoff C to finish the modification of the "mast"
I call it the "Road Warrior" mount. No pics till it gets back in my posession.

I'm also really curious to see paddle-cam footage with the Revl (and it's rotational stabilization).  Anyone try it?
