Foot Pain and Swelling During Ultra Races - Prevention?
« on: February 07, 2018, 05:00:10 PM »
Curious if any of you have done ultra long races 30+ miles and have had issue with feet/lower leg pain, swelling, etc? If so, any tips on preparing for such distances, prevention and/or remedies?

Thanks!

Yes, and yes, though I have DVI (deep vein insufficiency) so the swelling is a given. Knee high compression socks take care of most of the problem. An additional layer of mat where you usually stand takes care of the rest. I recommend an extra thick EVA yoga mat. Just a piece a little bigger than your foot suffices. I glue it on with 3m spray mount.

What Pono said...that and move your feet. I also find that a pad with deeper grooves seems to help.

On a related note. The compression sock thing made the cramps I was getting disappear. If I start having cramps I simply wear them for a few days...not even necessarily on the water...and they stop.

I  have always  had  foot problems  and I   wear   orthotics  inside  my low cut booties. If you  wear shoes  all the time its hard to do anything  for  a long  period  barefoot .

Something else to consider. I've had a better experience on long distance paddles using a mosaic for the pad. I think it promotes better blood flow. Slight movements of your feet on a flat pad doesn't result in much change but on a mosaic it completely changes where the compression is on the bottom of your feet. I don't get the same dull ache as quickly on a mosaic as I do on a regular pad.

+1 on compression socks.  Anything over 16 miles and my calves feel sludgey without compression sleeves.  I prefer sleeves to socks.
