First Impressions of my 9'1 Sunova Creek
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:52:22 AM »
After 2 weeks of nothing, we finally had waist to shoulder high waves this morning.  I've ridden my new Creek 5 or 6 times in knee/ankle surf, but that's not a fair test of a board.  When we get a little better surf I'll try to get some decent vid with the SoloShot.

Fit and Finish: This is the prettiest board I have ever owned.  Almost too pretty to ride.  The deck pad came unstuck in one place, but a little contact cement took care of that.

Stability: It's tippy for a 31" wide board....and I love that.  It's more tippy than my 30" wide Element.  The slight dome in the deck does that, but it also helps the board get on a rail better.

Turning:
Wow, just wow.  Just like Rick specified, you can pump up speed from the middle of this board.  I've never had a SUP that I can pump like that.  Today I was able to take off behind a section and pump the board down the line to beat a couple of sections.  Way fun!  I've yet to pull a satisfying slash cutback with it, but I think that was due to my questionable foot placement technique.  Gotta work on that.

Speed:  This board is faaaaast.  I think it has something to do with the wicked channels at the tail.  Looking forward to attempting some tube rides with it.  Something else I have not been able to do before on a SUP.

All in all, I'm optimistic about this one.  It's a little heavier than I expected, but it's built really solid.  It seems like this board will last a long time.

Glad to see you're getting to know the ins and outs of your new board. You'll really enjoy the new learning sessions you'll have with it.

The ETA on my board's arrival at the shipping terminal in Houston, TX for pickup is for tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb 7th. I checked on my tracking number for the board right before I came to the Zone site, but it hasn't been updated since 05:20 am, Monday, Feb 5th and at that time, it was enroute to San Antonio, TX.

I'll check on the tracking number a few times today for an update.

Congrat's again Zoo.....enjoyed the initial review.  Its a bit strange to me to hear the 9'1" is pretty tippy when I feel my 9'4" is quite solid at only 3 inches longer but then again I realize there are lots of other parameters like width, volume, etc. that play into the 9'1" that make it quite different that its slightly longer bigger brother.

Look forward to your next review with some eye candy!!!!

Thanks, WhatSup.  Tippy is a subjective thing, I think.  It's certainly more tippy than I expected, but it's still pretty stable.  Way more stable than the 28" Hokua and other boards I have or used to have.  So far, I'm loving the Creek.

I'm hoping conditions this weekend allow for using the SoloShot.  If so, I'll shoot some vid.  I don't think anyone wants to see it in ankle high waves.  Today is the only day we have some decent surf, but it's windy and jumbled.  Uggg.

But you can't try yours for awhile due to water temperature, right?  That waiting is going to be torture.

Zoo.... Yea! You finally got some waves!!!
I was happy to read your comments on the 9'1.... very stoked you like it!
It is great that people are finally getting them and posting rider feedback.
All Sunova's feel "tippy"when you first get on them.... but soon you realize your not falling over... it's just the rails sitting lower in the water.

I have a 9'1 coming soon.... hopefully I'll get some clean conditions to ride it.
I suspect it will be a nice step down from my 9'4.
Whatz^... you can ride mine when I get home.... but that won't be for a loooong time  ;D

NW... you'll have to move further south! Have fun with your new board!!!

I'm not really saying it's tippy, I'm just saying it's tippy for a 31" board.  It's the perfect stability for me.

Yes, because I don't wear any wet/dry suits. As I type this, the water temperature at Lake Conroe is 50 degrees F. I don't mind the wait. I figure my 66 degrees F comfort zone water temperature will be reached in the third week in March. Besides, the build for my board took 8 weeks. I ordered my board on December 7th, 2017.

I'd love to move to Port Aransas, TX but my wife has all of her family here where we live and she is afraid of hurricanes destroying everything. Port Aransas is right on the middle coast of Texas. As I type this, the water temperature at PA is 56 degrees F.
